  1. Can You PassA Sobriety Test?

  2. What Is Sobriety? • Sobriety is the condition of having a sound, clear mind; body and mind are in control; clear-headed and self-controlled • We typically associate sobriety with the problem of alcohol and drugs • Are you in control of your mind and body at all times? Can you pass God’s sobriety test?

  3. Free from Intoxicants • When we are intoxicated, our sound mind (judgment) and body are not in control (Gen. 9:20-24; Prov. 23:29-35; 31:4-5) • Christians are to be “alert” or “watchful”; Gr. nepho = to be free from the influence of intoxicants; in the NT, metaphorically of watchfulness (1 Thess. 5:6,8; 2 Tim. 4:5; 1 Pet. 1:13; 4:7; 5:8); Gr. nephalios (not drink) is found in 1 Tim. 3:11; Tit. 2:2

  4. Free from Intoxicants • Alcohol and drugs are not the only things that intoxicate • A person can be “intoxicated” or “drunk” with power, prestige, or passion; their mind and body is not sober or controlled • Lascivious means “without restraint” (Gal. 5:19)

  5. Sobriety in the NT • Sobriety is not limited to matters of alcohol or drugs • Christians are to be “sober-minded”; Gr. sophron =of sound mind (sozo, “to save,” phren, “the mind”); hence, self-controlled, sober-minded (see 1 Tim. 3:2; Tit. 1:8; Tit. 2:2); in their right mind (see Mk. 5:15; Lk. 8:35)

  6. Sobriety in the NT • Christians are to think and be “sober”; Gr. sophroneo = to think soberly (Rom. 12:3; 2 Cor. 5:13; Titus 2:6; 1 Pet. 4:7) • Christians are to be “of sound mind”; Gr. sophronizo = to cause to be of sound mind, to recall to one's senses (Titus 2:4)

  7. Sobriety in the NT • Christians are to be acting “soberly” Gr. sophronos = soberly, it suggests the exercise of that self-restraint that governs all passions and desires, enabling the believer to be conformed to the mind of Christ (Tit. 2:12)

  8. Sobriety in the NT • Christians are to have “soundness of mind”; Gr. sophrosune = soundness of mind, soberness, sobriety, sound judgment practically expresses the meaning; it is that habitual inner self-government, with its constant rein on all the passions and desires, which would hinder the temptation to these from arising (Acts 26:25; 1 Tim. 2:9, 15)

  9. The Sober Christian We do not pass God’s sobriety test when we… • Lash out verbally or physically in anger • Give into the lust of the eye or flesh • Succumb to greed; gambling, debt, etc. • Think too highly of ourselves (Rom. 12:3)

  10. The Sober Christian We do not pass God’s sobriety test when we… • Live unprepared for the Lord’s return (1 Thess. 5:6-8; 1 Pet. 1:13; 4:7) • Dress immodestly (1 Tim. 2:9, 15) • Live ungodly and worldly lives (Tit. 2:12)

  11. The Sober Christian We do not pass God’s sobriety test when we… • Let the Devil devour us (1 Pet. 5:8) • Are you passing God’s sobriety test?
