  6. (unquam) Insperanti, hoc est gratum animo proprie • Comment on the use of insperanti (form and semantics) • To what does hoc refer? • Why does gratum end in um? • What case is animo? Why? • Translation: and to one not hoping, this is rightly pleasing to the soul

  7. Quare hoc est gratum nobisque est carius auro • Note the anaphora here. What does is accomplish? • What case is nobis and what words does it parallel? • What form is carius and why? • What case is auro and why? • Translation: And therefore this is pleasing to me and dearer than gold

  8. Quod te restituis, Lesbia, mi cupido • How do we fit in quod? • What case is mi? • How does cupido fit in and to whom does it refer? • Translation: That you restore yourself to me who is wishing

  9. Restituis cupido atque insperanti, ipsa refers te • What point is he making here? How is this determined? • Note the elisions. Comment? • Translation: Restore to me wishing and not hoping, you, yourself, bring back yourself to me. (nobis enjambed)

  10. Nobis. O lucem candidiore nota! • O lucem= accusative of exclamation! • What case are candidore nota? • Translation: Oh light with a brighter mark! This is an idiom much like our expression, “Red letter day.”

  11. Quis me uno vivit felicior, aut magis hac quid • What case are me uno? What kind of form is this? • Translation: Who lives luckier than me alone, or

  12. (aut magis hac quid) Optandum vita dicere quis poterit? • What is missing in this line? • What does hac modify? • Translation: or who could say what must be wished for more than this?
