  2. Today’s Goal • Provide an overview of dual credit and dual enrollment in academic and career/technical education in Mississippi’s community/junior colleges • Highlight changes made in the 2011 Legislative Session to Mississippi statute

  10. Definitions Dual Enrollment (§37-15-38) • A dual enrolled student is a student who is enrolled in a community or junior college or state institution of higher learning while enrolled in high school.

  11. Definitions Dual Credit (§37-15-38) • A dual credit student is a student who is enrolled in a community or junior college or state institution of higher learning while enrolled in high school and who is receiving high school and college credit for postsecondary coursework.

  12. Academic Maximum Allowable Credits • Dual Enrollment – student’s can earn up to a semester's worth of college credit in high school (semester’s worth = 15 college credit hours) • Dual Credit – unlimited number of college credits

  13. Academic EligibilityCriteria Recommendation Option 1 • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale on all high school courses and • Successful completion of 14 core high school units and/or junior status and • Written recommendation from school principal or guidance counselor

  14. Academic EligibilityCriteria Recommendation Option 2 • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale on all high school courses and • A minimum composite ACT score of 30 or the equivalent SAT score and • Written recommendation from school principal or guidance counselor

CTE EligibilityCriteria Recommendation • Criteria for eligibility is determined by each college • Memorandums of Agreement must be signed with local school districts • Must meet the same admission criteria as a traditional students • Written recommendation from school principal or guidance counselor

  16. College or University Decides • Course pre-requisites • Placement • Instructor • Teaching site • Teaching schedule • Tuition & fees (sometimes negotiable)

  17. Academic Dual Credit Course Offerings • List of 58 courses approved by all 15 community colleges • Courses within the academic general education core • Courses within the statewide articulation agreement with IHL • No developmental education courses

  18. High School CarnegieUnit Equivalency • One (1) three-hour college course is equal to one-half (1/2) high school Carnegie unit. • A full Carnegie unit may be awarded for a three-hour college course upon approval of the local superintendent. • Partial credit agreements may be developed.
