  1. Gulliver’s Travelsby: Johnathan Swift Published by the Penguin Group, 1983 Maxine Walters

  2. Introduction • The novel is about Lemuel Gulliver’s experiences as he discovers and inhabits four foreign islands. He is from England and sets out on trips with captains and other crew members, but always ends up away from the others and alone on an inhabited island. At the beginning of the story, Lemuel is shipwrecked and swims to the island of Lilliput.

  3. Protagonist/ Antagonist • The protagonist is Lemuel Gulliver. He is a prideful English surgeon with a wife and two children who is fascinated with exploring the world. • There are many antagonists in the story. They consist of all of the beings on the islands that oppose Lemuel, such as SkyreshBolgolam and Flimnap on Lilliput, the dwarf on Brobdingnag, and others.

  4. Central Conflict • Four individual stories told, and the central conflict is that he is addicted to travelling and is unsatisfied with human nature.

  5. Minor Characters • Glumdalclitch is the daughter of the farmer who takes in Gulliver at Brobdingnag. She takes care of him and acts as his little nurse, the literal meaning of her name. • Flimnap is the Lord High Treasurer of Lilliput. He is first friends with Gulliver, but then turns on him when he believes his wife has had an affair with him and conspires to have him Killed. • The Struldbruggs are immortal humans. Although they are immortal, they become increasingly weak and absent-minded.

  6. What Did the Critics Say? • Book Review Circle says that Swift used satire to shame men out of their bad deeds. He attacks Europe’s as well as all of mankind’s “politics, religion, morality, human nature, and colonialism”. • http://www.book-review-circle.com/gullivers-travels-jonathan-swift.html • A member of Mouthshut.com reflects on Swift’s use of satire, allegory, and irony. He also asserts that the author has themed the book on human nature and managed to raise several questions in the reader’s mind. • http://www.mouthshut.com/review/Gulliver-s-Travels-Jonathan-Swift-review-mqlnrqsnp

  7. What Do I Have to Say? • Although this book is quite lengthy, I would definitely recommend it to a friend. The book was surprisingly humorous at some points, but also had a good message. Because the book contains aspects that are not common in most books, it kept me wondering what would happen next.
