Public Information in Alcoholics Anonymous: Carrying the Message of Recovery

Public Information (PI) in Alcoholics Anonymous involves informing the general public about the AA program and carrying the message of recovery to the still-suffering alcoholic. This can be done through media outreach, educational institutions, industry, and other organizations. By sharing our experience and gratitude, AA members can make their experience available freely to help those struggling with alcoholism. Public Information takes various forms, including meeting listings, distribution of AA literature, and media appearances. Forming a PI committee can help coordinate efforts and set goals to reach out to the public and provide resources for the recovery community.

  1. What is Public Information work ? Why Should AA’s Do It?

  2. Public Information (P.I.) in Alcoholics Anonymous means carrying the message of recovery to the still-suffering alcoholic by informing the general public about the A.A. program. We carry the message by getting in touch with and responding to the media, schools, industry, and other organizations which can report on the nature and purpose of A.A (PI Workbook Page No 5)

  3. In all Public Relations, A.A.’s sole objective is to the still suffering alcoholic

  4. Why Should AA’s Do It? • This can be done by making known to him. • Our experience should be made available freely. • All efforts in this field should always reflect our gratitude. • Many outside A.A. are equally concerned with the serious problem of alcoholism. (PI Workbook Page No 5)

  5. Bill W. Public Information takes many forms: the simple sign outside a meeting place that says “A.A. meeting tonight;” listing in local phone directories; distribution of A.A. literature; and radio and television shows using sophisticated media techniques. Whatever the form, it comes down to “one drunk carrying the message to another drunk,” whether through personal contact or through the use of third parties and the media. (PI Workbook Page No 5)

  6. Those of us who have tried to shoulder the entire burden and trouble of others find we are soon overcome by them.(Big Book Page 132)

  7. “The whole system, even the parts that are separated by cosmic distances, functions as a whole system.”Theorist John S. Bell

  8. It isn't "me" and "you" anymore; it's "we" and "us" I get drunk. “We stay sober” It's a “we” program.
