  3. Career • ’69-’80: Assistant professor Computer Science, Penn State • ’80-’87: Wrote books, worked at IBM, UC- Santa Barbara, University of Arizona • ‘87: Returned to Penn State, focused on computational biology

  4. Contributions to Bioinformatics • Developer of BLAST with Gene Meyer • Developer of Genome Browser with David Haussler

  5. Major Achievements • 2009 Accomplishment by a Senior Scientist Award • Listed among the 2009 Time 100 • Successfully sequenced the DNA of a woolly mammoth in 2008

  6. Current Research • Sequencing genomes of rare, endangered, and extinct species including the woolly mammoth, Tasmanian tiger and the Tasmanian devil. • Hopes to understand their biology and prevent extinction of endangered species.
