  1. What is the Function of Activated Alumina in Water Treatment? Activated Alumina is a desiccant that is very commonly used in the treatment of drinking water. It is generally manufactured by dehydroxylation of Aluminium Hydroxide in such a manner that the result is a highly porous material. It is this porous material, which is widely used in removing impurities from the surroundings. Activated Alumina has a surface area of more than 200 square meters/g, with a very high surface-area-to-weight ratio, which makes the adsorbent process faster and more effective. The main benefit of using Activated Alumina is that more impurities can be absorbed over more areas in a shorter period. The numerous tunnel-like pores of the Activated Alumina desiccant are its biggest plus- point. The substance facilitates the removal of arsenic and fluoride from drinking water, hence making it safer for consumption. They allow only those molecules to pass through, which are smaller than the even-sized pores while the larger molecules are left behind. Activated Alumina doesn’t function as a water filtration system. It’s a water treatment device that adsorbs the contaminants present in the water. It consists of a bed of activated alumina granules, which adsorb impurities when water is passed through it. Activated Alumina can be particularly useful for treating source water, which often has high levels of sulfate concentration. Activated Alumina is the first choice for many municipal corporations around the world for removing impurities like fluoride, arsenic, and selenium from water meant for drinking and household purposes. Activated alumina is often used as a point-of-entry or point-of-use water treatment device. Activated alumina absorbs contaminants instead of filtering them. The effectiveness of activated alumina depends on the chemical form of the contaminant to be removed. For example, under certain circumstances chlorinating the water before activated alumina treatment will convert arsenic into the form most likely to be adsorbed by activated alumina. Adding chlorine to the water before the treatment process can improve the adsorption process. pH levels also play an important role in determining the efficiency of the Activated Alumina treatment. Typically, pH levels should be below 8.5 for the best results. Pretreatment to adjust the pH levels in the water can improve the Activated Alumina water treatment process and yield better results. It’s also important to regenerate or dispose of the activated Alumina with great caution to avoid harming the environment. The effectiveness of activated alumina depends on the contaminant, characteristics of the alumina, the device design, and water quality. A serious drawback to using activated alumina is that regenerating it requires the use of strong acid and base solutions that are undesirable for home storage and handling. If you’re looking to buy activated alumina, Bee Chems is a popular manufacturer and supplier of the Actas® that is used by various industries. The organization is well renowned for providing solutions to

  2. some of the country’s most diversified industries. In addition to Actas®, the company also provides other products including molecular sieve, oxygen absorbers, Nano silica, alumina sols, lithium silicate, sodium silicate, and many more.
