  2. Diwali or Deepawali , is the most important festival celebrated by Hindus in India and around the world. • The festival is usually in the month of October. • And is called the festival of lights. (deepa is light in the Indian language.)

  3. Every home and shops is made bright with lamps that are lit . • These are made out of clay and are specially lit on Diwali for prayer and as decorations. • The lights are used to signify and celebrate the inner light that every person has within.

  4. New clothes are worn by all. • The girls wear bright and colourful dresses. • The ladies wear gorgeous, shiny saris.

  5. In the evening families and friends get together, sing folk songs and dance. • Each community has a special dance, some with sticks and some with lights and clay lamps. • The houses & streets are covered with fairy lights.

  6. The entrance to their homes is decorated with coloured chalk powder, this art is called Rangoli. • Special sweets called Loddous are made and shared among friends and neighbours

  7. The Hindu people have a pooja on this day. • It is a Religious celebration like mass. • On this day people pray for success in business and wealth.

  8. Beautiful fireworks are lit through the night this is a symbol of driving away evil.
