Collective Taxis Backgroung After a three year preparatory period this innovative service- the first in Portugal (and so far the only) runs since 2000, partly substituting abandoned former bus services with a semi collective service for ensuring mobility and quality of life for the rural population. Collective Taxis Descriptionof actual maincharacteristics • working on week-ends; • taxi are running like a bus with fixed lines and present timetables; • tickets are purchased at the central station or in the interior of taxi; • taxi cross the main city points of services and shopping; • people share the taxi to their maximum capacity; • if demand exceeds supply, extra taxis are called; • reduced mobility passengers have a door to door service. Collective Taxis • How the project is funded? • fare costs 10 % more than normal bus fare, and the variation is between €1,65 and €3,25; • taxi driver gets normal taxi fare paid minus 20 %; • the operating deficit of an average 1000 € per month is supported 60 % by the municipality and 40 % by the bus operator. Collective Taxis • Results • some 700 to 1100 passengers are transportedperyear; • theserviceisusedmainly for journeys to work; • theserviceisusedbypeopleagedbetween 24 and 64, butalso for olderpeople; • people are entitled to a low-cost semi public service; • taxi drivers increase their revenue at week-ends with this regular service.
