  1. What is tone? The attitude that an author adopts with regards to a specific character or place or development in a piece of writing

  2. Why does tone matter? Because it is one way that authors tell the reader how to feel about a text. You cannot understand a piece of writing without an understanding of tone.

  3. What are some common tones? • Happy, Sarcastic, Depressed, Suspicious, Angry, Skeptical, Enthusiastic, Terse, • Disenchanted, Hopeful, Naïve • Overjoyed, Clinical, and many more…

  4. Tone can be created through word choice “The opinion expressed by his Honor that such a course would be little less than sacrilege, was eminently just and proper.” -Samuel Clemens

  5. Tone can be created through sentence structure “You started it,” the girl said. “I was being amused. I was having a fine time.” “Well, let’s try and have a fine time.” “All right. I was trying. I said the mountains looked like white elephants. Wasn’t that bright?” -Ernest Hemingway
