  1. Spring Planting Update For The Garden 2019 By Benedict T. Palen, Jr. Even as winter hangs on in many parts of the US, the warm days that we are experiencing as April looms bring thoughts of summer, and the garden. We just planted part of our 2019 onion crop the other day, and we are getting ready to plant potatoes in the ground. Seeds of many flowers were started indoors about three weeks ago, and they are growing nicely.

Garden and yard cleanup can now begin, and nitrogen fertilizer should be applied to lawns and gardens so that spring moisture will help to push the nitrogen into the soil. Cleanup of perennial flower and plant beds can now start so that old growth is removed, and new shoots are encouraged in the coming weeks.

Over the years, we have seen snow on Mother’s Day here in Colorado, so our rule of thumb is to set out plants just after Mother’s Day. As for seeds, they can be put in the ground in our area a few days before Mother’s Day, and they should be just fine. There is some leeway if you have an area with southern exposure that is protected from the cold that may be present in more shady areas of the yard.

Some areas of the US do not need this starter fertilizer, so it’s best to check with your local garden store or county extension agent to ask for advice specific to your location. Happy Gardening!
