  2. Function • Respiratory System is responsible for taking air from the atmosphere into the lungs and transfers oxygen to the blood. Source: The Respiratory System Chelsea House Publishers

  3. Structure • Lungs- Oxygen is the fuel all the cells and organs of our body need to function is extracted there from the air we inhale and infused into the bloodstream, to be distributed to other organs and tissues. With each exhalation, we dispose of the carbon dioxide that is the by-product of our bodily processes. • Diaphragm- The strong wall of muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity. By moving downward, it creates suction in the chest to draw in air and expand the lungs. • Trachea-The passage leading from the throat to the lungs. Source: World Book Encyclopedia, www.lungsusa.com

  4. Relationship to Other Systems • Medulla Oblongata is the lowest part of the cerebral stem in the brain, which the Respiratory Center is found. Source: www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/, The Respiratory System Chelsea House Publishers

  5. Diseases or Conditions • Asthma- A chronic lung disease that causes breathing problems which are known as attacks or episodes of Asthma. • Emphysema- Is a condition which causes an over inflation of structure in the lungs that causes a decrease in respiratory function, and often breathlessness. 6. Interesting and Unusual Facts • Every minute you breath in 13 pints of air. • Your lungs contain almost 1500 miles of airways and over 300 million alveoli. • Plants are our partners in breathing. We breathe in air, use the oxygen in it, and release carbon dioxide. Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. • Every year, close to 342,000 Americans die of lung disease.
