What is Social Media? • Online technologies that people use to share content, opinions, insights, experiences, and perspectives. • Evolving collection of online tools that enable us to share info, ideas and personal messages. • An efficient way of interacting with others, and easy access to instant global information and news

  3. How has social media changed the world? • Telegrams, mail, telephones, and email are no longer the only ways of long distance communication. • Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace and many other video and photo sharing sites, blogging sites, and social networks are what makes communication and information efficient and easily accessible today.

  4. What caused Social Media? • The primary cause of social media is the development and evolution of technology and internet • Overtime, technology has changed society because it defines and determines communication and interaction with others • For example, Facebook was initially restricted to Harvard university, but now it has evolved to having over 500 million users world wide.

Pros and Cons of Social Media Prosvs Cons Helps people create new relationships that have common interests Powerful tool for social change(sites created for people with medical needs and other awareness) Instant world wide information Less face to face interaction effects peoples social skills An increase in cyber bullying The risk and increase of online predators Can be the cause of social isolation

Evolutionary Theory and Social Change • Social Media is a result of the evolution of internet and communication between people • It has altered the way many businesses function, has created new jobs, and has made online communication efficient • It can be seen as a positive change due to many alternative and simple ways to contact others • Interaction with others is no longer face to face but is more often through social networks

Social Media Challenges -Although social media seems beneficial to society, the accessibility and simplicity of it may affect the learning process and creativity of youth. -There may be more cyber bullying and disrespectful online groups -Social media may effect face to face interaction and social skills that are needed in everyday life
