  1. Humans as Information Processors The brain processes information from experiences and stores it in Long-Term Memory.

  2. Human Information Processing Model When we deal with information, we do it in steps. Picture this as process of acquiring, retaining and using information in an activity called information processing. 3. Three Stages of Memory The flowchart for this theory of memory indicates that all incoming information first passes through Sensory Memory (SM) before it enters ShortTerm Memory (STM). There it can be maintained by rehearsal and either successfully encoded for storage in LongTerm Memory (LTM) or forgotten. In retrieval, the information passes from LTM back to STM, where it enters our consciousness. www.dushkin.com

  4. Stimulation from the environment signals the brain to think. What is the sum of 5 and 2 ?

  5. Process the Question • Student must hear the question • Understand the question Working memory has an interface role with the long term memory and the stimulation from the environment.

  6. “What Is ?” “How Do I?” Declarative Knowledge “ What Is ?” • Process of elaboration stimulated • Prior knowledge related to new experience. • Long-Term Memory activated. Procedural Knowledge “ How Do I ?”

  7. LONG TERM MEMORY ACTIVATED D DeclarativeKnowledge “What is 7 ?” “What is 5 ?” “What is a sum?” Procedural Knowledge “What Is a Product ?” “How Do I Add ?”

  8. Activate mental procedure to answer the question by using addition. Meta-Cognition is the mental management process that monitors thoughts and memory to decide if the answer is known. Can I answer the question ?

  9. Declarative Knowledge + Procedural Knowledge _____________________________________________________________________ Answer to the Question Click here to continue
