  1. Mobile Learning: for Contemporary Kids Amber Moreno

  2. Why do today’s kids need mobile learning? • “Rigor and relevance can be enhanced with mobile learning technologies. Research in the learning sciences suggests that situated learning is especially effective when information is available “just in time (when learners are able to apply it) and on demand (when learners know they need it and want it). Because mobile devices don’t wed a child to the classroom or desk, they complement ‘just-in-time’ and ‘on demand learning.” (Shuler 2009)

  3. Ways to Implement Mobile Learning • Field Trips: students can access information about an unusually patterned butterfly on their handheld devices • Science and inquiry projects: research instantly to collect data • Social Studies - (access to Google Earth)

  4. Ways to Implement Learning Continued… • Language Arts: Create instant books on Flickr • Math: (Google calculator, measurement conversions, etc.) • Other ideas??? 

  5. Steps to Getting Started: Notify Parents – Strengthen the home school connection Develop a Responsible Use Policy – What are the expectations for using the devices? Establish Classroom Management Procedures – What will work well within your building or classroom? Plan activities ‘with’ students – Give students choices in their learning Teach Safety & Etiquette – students need to be able to develop safe and appropriate use of devices they are using
