  2. multipurpose feedstock? • Algae are multipurpose biomass feedstock for food, medicine, feed, and biofuel production.

  3. Why increasing algal biomass is interested on? • Two factors determine the efficiency in practical projects; biomass and metabolic content • Amount of algal biomass is around 2 g/L/day dry weight that is one of the most limiting factors in algal industries. • Increasing of algal biomass is important in all above industries. Slide Num: 3

  4. Chlorella vulgaris • Unicellular green algae. • Well known • Fast growing • multipurpose

  5. why phytohormones? • Different factors have traditionally been examined for increasing of algal biomass. Phytohormones are: • Used in very low concentration • Inexpensive some types • Used in simple methods • Well known from long time ago

  6. How phytohormones can increase algal biomass? Phytohormones : • In higher plant affect size, volume and cell division rate • In microalgae, increase cell division rate and some times increase nutrient uptake Slide Num: 6

  7. How did we carryout the experiment? • Chlorella vulgaris (UTEX 265) was obtained from the University of Texas at Austin. • Modified Bristol media was used as the based medium. • A complete randomized design in a factorial matrix with 3 replications was considered Slide Num: 7

  8. How did we carryout the experiment? • Effect of 2, 4-D (2, 4-D chlorophenoxyacetic acid), BAP (6-Benzylaminopurine) and ABA (Abscisic acid), in the concentration by 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 ppm on the biomass production was studied. 2, 4-D and BAP in 5 ppm increased the biomass production Slide Num: 8

  9. Our results of the experiment? 2, 4-D and BAP in 5 ppm increased the biomass production The maximum amount of biomass for the control, 2, 4-D, and BAP in the last day of the experiments was 3.6, 2.5, and 4.4 mg dry weight/L respectively. Slide Num: 9

  10. Our results of the experiment? Slide Num: 10

  11. Slide Num: 11

  12. Kinetic equation Slide Num: 12

  13. Conclusion • Among applied phytohormones, 2,4-D and BAP could increase amount of biomass • The best results was obtained by BAP 5 ppm • Phytohormones increased rated of substrate utilization
