  1. Interactive Documentary / Blog – Looking at Bristol’s Youth Culture By Shad

  2. https://shadsphotographyportfolio.wordpress.com/ - Link to the project I did last semester This project is a continuation of my last project by looking at Youth Cultures, primarily in the UK. I will still be pursing a photography based project as I felt like I managed to achieve what I wanted to portray.

  3. My aim for this semester: I want to create an interactive documentary which dives into the several youth culture attractions which are present here in Bristol. With the ability I had to create a photography piece for my final project last semester, it was only right for me to do another but change up my layouts and ideas. This time around, I thought it would be a good idea by creating an interactive documentary which looks at the many youth culture attractions for youths here in Bristol. The reason I chose to go with Bristol is due to the city being the most comfortable choice as I have lived here my whole life and being part of the culture, know quite a bit about the many aspects which determine Bristol’s youth culture.

  4. Relevant readings/theories- Recommendations Susan Sontag's 'On Photography‘ (1977) – I was recommended this book by Jon. After reading a few pages of this short book, it helped me develop my understanding more into the relationship the photographer has with their subjects. The book dives into the reasons particular photographs undertake their procedures in various different ways, which determine why there are many different styles of photography. "In deciding how a picture should look, in preferring one exposure to another, photographers are always imposing standards in their subjects.“ “To collect photographs is to collect the world.” 'Photography: A Critical Introduction', edited by Liz Wells (2004) Michelle Henning The Subject As Object: Photography and the Human Body – (2000) - http://www.susansontag.com/SusanSontag/books/onPhotographyExerpt.shtml http://writing.upenn.edu/library/Sontag-Susan-Photography.pdf https://tracesofthereal.com/2009/12/17/the-subject-as-object-photography-and-the-human-body-michelle-henning-2000/

  5. What the project will explore: • The main areas which I want to explore (which may not be chosen for the final draft) are the themes of – • Fashion: looking at the various different type of styles the youths of Bristol have. I could look into the various areas of Bristol and see the differences and similarities people have in each section of the city. For this, similar to my last project I could gather pictures of various styles and talk about them along with theories which would be relevant to the source. Ideally, if I could also get 1 to 1 interviews with individuals and ask them about their choice of fashion and any influences that have lead them to choose their chosen styles. • Night-life – Get a visual insight of the night-life here in Bristol • Sport - Similarly to the fashion, I could interview individuals and take photos of the sport-life in Bristol • Food – Could explore the best food spots across Bristol, see what the most popular places are • Music – Get a taste of the music scene here, similarly to my previous project I could look into the Grime/Drill scene once again as it is very popular here
