Employment Project The Process Today there are 27 Travellers employed throughout the administrative and outdoor staff in South Dublin Invitation to support groups to identify young travellers Information Day – Off Site Field Trip – Meet Supervisors,depots,work Locations Informal Interview/Selection Process – Off Site Induction – (1) At Start Of Training And (2) At Start Of Work Experience Two Way Pact = Complete Programme – Get Employment Remuneration SAME WORK AS GENERAL STAFF – SELECT AREA WHERE EVIDENCE OF WORK IS VISIBLE EG – LANDSCAPING/PLANTING AT ROUNDABOUT - Pride Softly/Softly Approach At Start – Incremental Intro To Rules And Regulations Support/Early Response To Problems Mentor/Continuous Evaluation/Performance GRADUATION DAY FOR PARTICIPANTS AND FAMILIES - Pride

Action Four: Development of an Estate Management mechanism Lead Agency SDCC The Traveller Accommodation Unit has continued the Estate Management Initiative by bi-monthly visits to the traveller specific developments within the county area to discuss tenant issues. Talks held on following: Home ManagementTenants responsibilities re: maintenance/ how to avoid causing damage to a house;Tips on how to carry out basic maintenance jobs around the house Maintaining a good rent account Environmental Issues (Part I)Impact of burning/ dumping on environment & health;Procedures around management of unlicensed dogs Environmental Issues (Part II)Waste managementRecycling Estate Managementdeveloping a positive living environment;Council’s response to anti-social behaviour Support Services- support available from the Council/ other agenciesSaving Money/ DIY Outreach services: In discussioons recently with the Traveller Development Groups it has been agreed that SDCC and the Traveller Development Groups will now visit the sites on a joint basis. Leaflet being distributed in respect of savings in use of electricity and gas Summer Projects: Staff worked with Development Groups and tenants in painting projects during the summer. Photos Other Initiatives: Mobile Library visists Kishogue Park monthly, Capsule Library proposed for Lynchs Park Café: As part of Traveller Focus Weeks (30th November – 11th December), the Social Inclusion Unit and the Traveller Accommodation will host a café style conversation in St. Ronan’s Community Centre next Tuesday 1st December 2009. The proposed questions for the event are: What are the best things about the Traveller way of life? How can we maintain and grow these things? Copper Bucket photos T-Factor photos

Action 5 – Case Management Lead Agency – HSE/SDCC 5 Traveller Accommodation Workers Employed (Tenancy Sustainment) Current cases – 40 – 24 considered high level of the 24 high level cases 7 families are moving forward Benefits sometimes not apparent for two generations Barriers to success: Family feuding Trust building – Agenda resource “not getting what I want” Women being sent to prison for minor offences – breaks contact/progress Women Refuge visits – breaks contact/progress Violence in home – pushed out of home Mental Health – not accepted – not accessing services Drugs/Alcohol – causes difficulties/misunderstandings Gender base feuding – no forgiveness, shame never goes away Requires good interagency co-operation for success

Actoin 6 – Active Citzen Lead Agency – Gardai Funding received for employment of two workers who will be based in each of the Traveller Development Groups, who will work with the Traveller Youth on a restorative justice based programme: Workers will take up positons by end 2009 Steering group (Gardai, Development Groups & SDCC) for this action is currently developing modules for progressing this action.
