The Doctrine of Baptisms 1 Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2 of thedoctrine of baptisms, of laying on of hands, of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this we will do if God permits.(Hebrews 6:1-3) 2

  3. The Doctrine of Baptisms Common View: “It will be observed that the plural form is used here – baptisms. There are two baptisms whose necessity is taught by the Christian religion – baptism by water, and by the Holy Ghost: the first of which is an emblem of the second.” (Albert Barnes, Notes on the New Testament, Hebrews, 126) BUT:Acts 8:12-17– Water baptism was before they received the Holy Spirit! 3

Baptism • Baptize(baptizo): “dip, submerge, immerse” • “…used among the Greeks to signify the dyeing of a garment, or the drawing of water by dipping a vessel into another…” (Vine) • - Requires “much water” – Jno. 3:23 • - A burial – Col. 2:12 • - Going down into & coming up out of water – Acts 8:38-39 4

  5. Bible Baptisms • Baptized into Moses, 1 Cor. 10:2 • Baptism of John,Mk. 1:4; Acts 19:3-4 • Baptism of the Holy Spirit, Matt. 3:11 • Baptism of fire, Matt. 3:11 • Baptism of suffering, Matt. 20:22-23 • Baptism for the dead, 1 Cor. 15:29 • Baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus, Acts 19:5 5

  7. Which baptism shall we choose? Moses? John? Holy Spirit? Fire? Suffering? For the dead? In the name of the Lord Jesus? • Two is ONE too many! • None is ONE too few! • ONE is just right! • WHICH ONE? 7

  14. Holy Spirit Baptism A promise to be received - Lk. 24: 49; Acts 1:4-5, 8 G. Comm. Baptism A command to be obeyed -Acts 10: 48; Rom. 6:17-18 Holy Spirit Baptism and Great Commission Baptism • Accompanied by miracles – Acts 2:1-4 (10:44-46) • Not accompanied by miracles –Acts 8:12-17 14

  15. Holy Spirit Baptism For revelation (Jno. 14: 26; 16:13), inspiration (Ac 2:4) & confirmation (Ac 11:15-18; 15:6-9) G. Comm. Baptism For salvation –(Mk. 16:15-16; Acts 2:38; 22:16; 1 Pet. 3:21) Holy Spirit Baptism and Great Commission Baptism • Continues until Christ returns –(Matt. 28:18-20) • Ceased in first century (Eph. 4:5) 15

  16. The Great Commission Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believesandis baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.(Mark 16:15-16) 16

  17. Hear – Believe - Baptized And many of the Corinthians, hearing, believed and were baptized.(Acts 18:8) 17

  18. Duty of Unprofitable Servants So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was ourduty to do.’ (Luke 17:10) 18

  19. Obey Jesus Now! See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. (Hebrews 12:25) 19
