  2. JOHN PIKE John Pike is my grandfather x 4 I believe he was born in Londonderry, Ireland. My information is sourced via the census records and any other records I have been able to find. My name is Raymond and my mother was Margaret Pike born in 1911, she did not marry and registered my birth as Raymond Pike. I have since found out that in 1964 she amended my birth certificate and put my fathers name as Frederick Harold Foreman. This is where the whole thing becomes confusing because my dads name wasn’t Harold it was Alfred, but I have no intentions of going down that track. From the census records it seems that nearly all generations stayed around the Leicester area and were either employed in the hosiery or shoe factories. I left the UK in 1958 for Australia aboard the liner The Fairsky, which is where I met Patricia, she was 18 at the time. I remember the day I left as if it were yesterday. I had one suitcase. It was November and it was foggy and pissing down. I trudged to the bus stop at New Parks, Got off the bus in Charles street, still pissing down. Made my way to cental station and got the train to Southampton. I was so wet had to go to the toilet and change my clothes. Even me fags got wet. The ship was The Fairsky, but it had a sad ending. Sad ending to a fine lady. Leicester was at one time almost the centre of the universe regarding the shoe and hosiery industry. Now almost all have disappeared. Corha's was just one of the many victims.Cherub for children was another victim of cheap imports. Underlined words in white are interesting links. Well! To me they are.   3. JOHN PIKE John was born in Londonderry Northern Ireland about 1803. John married Eliza Crosby on 15 September 1830 at St. Margaret’s Leicester, Leicestershire. The records show that John and Eliza had a daughter Charlotte christened on 12 March 1834 at St. Margaret Leicester. The 1841 census showed that John aged 35 and Elizabeth aged 30 were living at Leicester and they had 3 children: 1834 Charlotte – aged 71839 George - aged 21841 Dinah - aged 3 months The 1851 census showed that John aged 45 was a boarder at 8 Clifton Gardens, Islington, at the home of Richard and Mary Ann Cox. John’s occupation was shown as excavator. The 1851 census showed that Elizabeth The 1861 census showed that John aged 58 and Elizh aged 53 were living at 5 Hardys Yard, Leicester, John ‘s occupation was not shown and Elizh occupation was shown as char woman. Also at the address were their children : George – aged 22, occupation finisherEliza – aged 18, occupation cotton winder (1843)Joseph – aged 16John - aged 9 (1851) The 1871 census showed that John aged 65 and Elizh. Aged 64 were living at 5 Hardys Yard, Leicester, John’s occupation was shown as framework knitter. Also at the address was their son – John aged 19 occupation shoe fitter. The 1881 census showed that John aged 76 and Elizabeth aged 71 were living at Court D No. 5 Mansfield street, Leicester. John’s occupation was shown as framework knitter.   5. The original Blue Boar Inn [pictured here] was some 200 yards away on the corner of Highcross Street and Blue Boar Lane. It was demolished in the 1830's and replaced by the Blue Boar in Southgate Street. Legend has it that King Richard III slept at the inn on the eve of his march to Bosworth Field in 1485. Another legend claims that King Richard hid £300 in gold coins in the bedstead and these remained undiscovered for many years until a later publican, Thomas Clarke, found them. He kept the Blue Boar Inn with his wife Agnes until his death in 1603. His wife remained in charge of the Blue Boar Inn until the autumn of 1604 when the fugitive Thomas Harrison sought lodgings at the pub.

  6. CHARLOTTE PIKE Charlotte was christened on 12 March 1834 at St. Margaret’s Leicester; her parents were shown as John Pike and Elizth. The 1841 census showed that Charlotte aged 7 was living with her parents John and Elizabeth at Leicester with her brother George aged 2 and sister Dinah aged 3 months. George was born about 1839 at Birmingham, England. The 1841 census showed that George aged 2 was living with his parents John and Elizabeth at Leicester with his sisters, Charlotte aged 7 and Dinah aged 3 months. The 1851 census showed that John aged 45 was a boarder at 8 Clifton Gardens Islington at the home of Richard and Mary Ann Cox. John’s occupation was shown as excavator. The 1861 census shows George aged 22, occupation finisher, was living with his parents John aged 58 and Elizh aged 53 at 5 Hardy Yard, Leicester, his fathers occupation was not shown and his mother’s occupation was shown as char woman. Also at the address were George’s sister Eliza aged 18, occupation cotton winder (1843) and his brothers, Joseph aged 16 and John aged 9. George married Elizabeth Haywood in Leicester between October and December 1859. The 1871 census showed that George aged 32 and Elizabeth aged 36 were living at 1 Court Lane, Sanvey Gate, Leicester, George’s occupation was shown as shoe finisher. They now had 4 children:   1861 William – aged 10 1865 George - aged 6 1867 John - aged 4 1870 Joseph – aged 1 The 1881 census showed that George aged 42 and Elizabeth aged 45 were living at 3 Court M Leicester. George’s occupation was shown as shoemaker and Elizabeth’s occupation was shown as seam mistress. Also at the address were their children : William – aged 20 shoe maker George - aged 16 shoe maker John - aged 14 scholar Joseph - aged 12 scholar l A seam mistress is someone who sews.   8. The 1891 census showed that George aged 52 and Elizabeth aged 58 were living at 3 Court Lane, Leicester. George’s occupation was shown as shoe finisher. Also at the address was their son Joseph aged 21, shoe finisher. The 1901 census showed that George aged 63, shoe finisher was living with his son Joseph aged 32 and his wife Elija Jane aged 33 at 6 Paynes Court, Leicester. Also at the address were Joseph and Elija Jane’s children , Florence aged 12, Clara aged 7 and Joseph aged 5. Usually very small houses stuck behind other houses and factories. Entry was gained via a passage or walkway. They had no backdoor and no plumbing.   9. WILLIAM PIKE William was born about 1860 in Leicester and his parents were George Pike and Elizabeth Haywood. The 1861 census showed that William aged 11 months was living with his grandparents William Haywood aged 61 and Mary Haywood aged 57 at 16 Craven Street, Leicester. William’s occupation was shown as Stocking Frame work knitter and Mary’s occupation was shown as steamer. Also at the address was William Haywood’s daughter Agnes aged 15, Piecener of Lambs wool, Elizabeth Pike aged 25 cotton winder, (Williams daughter) and his son Samuel aged 20 Loom hand. The 1871 census showed that William aged 10 was living with his parents, George aged 32 and Elizabeth aged 36 at 1 Court Lane, Sanvey Gate, Leicester, his father’s occupation was shown as shoe finisher. Also at the address were William’s brothers, George aged 6, John aged 4 and Joseph aged 1. The 1881 census showed that William aged 20, shoemaker was living with his parents, George aged 42 and Elizabeth aged 45 at 3 Court M Leicester. William’s father’s occupation was shown as shoe maker and his mother’s occupation was shown as seam mistress. Also at the address were William brothers, George aged 16 shoemaker, John aged 14 scholar and Joseph aged 12 scholar. It would appear that William married Catherine Rohan in 1887 Early stocking frame knitter. Invented around 1580

William’s occupation was shown as shoe finisher and Kate’s occupation was shown as Hosiery hand. They now had 3 children : 1885 William – aged 6 1888 John Thomas – aged 3 1891 Mary Ann - aged 2/12 The 1901 census showed that William aged 41 and Kate aged 38 were living at 6 Court C. Mansfield Street, Leicester. William’s occupation was shown as shoe finisher. Also at the address were their children : William aged 16 Shoe machinist Thomas aged 12 Elsie aged 5 (1896) Martin E. aged 1 month (1901) Not sure about this one, could have been in the Sanvey Gate area around 1950

  13. WILLIAM PIKE William was born about 1885 in Leicester, his parents were William and Kate. The 1891 census showed that William aged 6 was living with his parents, William aged 30 and Kate and 30 at 28 Green Street, St. Margaret’s, Leicester. His father‘s occupation was shown as shoe finisher and Kate’s occupation was shown as Hosiery hand. Also at the address were William’s brother John Thomas aged 3 and his sister Mary Ann aged 2 months. The 1901 census showed that William aged 16, shoe machinist was living with his parents, William aged 41 and Kate aged 38 at 6 Court C. Mansfield Street, Leicester. His father’s occupation was shown as shoe finisher. Also at the address were William’s brothers, Thomas aged 12, Martin E. aged 1 month and his sister Elsie aged 5. William married Mary Ann Shaw and they went on to have four children: 1911 Margaret 1926 Mary 1927 William 1928 Stanley Old picture of Metcalf and lead Streets. Has now been demolished and is factories and showrooms

  15. MARGARET PIKE Margaret was born on 14 November 1911 and her parents were William and Mary Ann Pike. Margaret died 23 April 1979 at home 45 Frolesworth Road, Leicester, aged 67 Margaret never married but she had 5 children : The following children have the name Foreman 1934 Raymond – was registered as Pike but his surname was changed to Foreman in 1964, showing fathers name as Frederick Harold Foreman It's a braw, bricht moonlicht nicht the nicht Patricia and Kerry

  16. 1938 KEITH FOREMAN 1940 BARRY FOREMAN The following children have the name Pike - their father was Walter Henry Abbott 1951 TERENCE PIKE  1953 DAVID PIKE Margaret lived all her life in Leicester, Raymond remembers living in 23 Pringle Street, 4 Henry Street and then 45 Frolesworth Road, Leicester until her death in 1979. Like many Leicester people she worked in the shoe industry for many years. She didn’t much like pubs but in the early days she did like her weekly outing to her favourite club which was in Bond Street.   18. MARY JANE PIKE Mary was born about 1926, in Leicestershire; her parents were William and Mary Ann Pike. Mary died in August 1985? She either married or lived with Gordon Johnson. They had two children Elaine Gordon Mary was a somewhat quiet sort of person. She worked for Leicester council, something to do with garbage collection. I think she may have worked on garbage collection trucks. She used to bring home endless amounts of books and comics. I first met her partner , Gordon, at a street party in Pingle street. It was VE day, the celebration of victory over Europe. Even at age 11 I thought he was a bit smarmy. He had this permanent, irritating grin all the time. Patricia Foreman with Mary Jane Pike

  21. CHRISTINA PIKE 1988 LUKE 1990 JOSHUA 1998 JACK STANLEY PIKE Stanley was born about 1928 in Leicestershire. His parents were William and Mary Ann Shaw. Stanley died in September 1994. Stanley was a bit odd. The sort of person you don’t care to admit to being related to. His last known field of occupation was something to do with iron foundries. ELSIE PIKE Elsie was born about 1929 in Leicestershire, her parents were William and Mary Ann Shaw.

The 1891 census showed that John Thomas aged 3 was living with his parents; William aged 30 and Kate and 30 at 28 Green Street, St. Margaret’s, Leicester. His father’s occupation was shown as shoe finisher and Kate’s occupation was shown as Hosiery hand. Also at the address were John’s brother William aged 6 and his sister Mary Ann aged 2 months. The 1901 census showed that Thomas (John) aged 12 was living with his parents, William aged 41 and Kate aged 38 at 6 Court C. Mansfield Street, Leicester. His father’s occupation was shown as shoe finisher. Also at the address were Thomas’s brothers William aged 16, shoe machinist, Martin E. aged 1 month and his sister Elsie aged 5. His father’s occupation was shown as shoemaker and his mother’s occupation was shown as seam mistress. Also at the address were Joseph’s brothers William aged 20 shoemaker, George aged 16 shoe maker and John aged 14 scholar. The 1891 census showed that Joseph aged 21 shoe finisher was living with his parents George aged 52 and Elizabeth aged 58 at 3 Court Lane, Leicester. His father’s occupation was shown as shoe finisher.  Joseph married Elija (Eliza) Jane  The 1901 census showed that Joseph aged 32 and his wife Elija Jane aged 33 at were living at 6 Paynes Court, Leicester. Also at the address were their children. 1889 Florence - aged 12 1894 Clara - aged 7 1896 Joseph - aged 5 Also living with them was Joseph’s father George aged 63 who was now a widow. The 1861 census showed that Joseph aged 16 was living with his parents John aged 58 and Elizh aged 53 at 5 Hardys Yard, Leicester, his father’s Occupation was not shown and his mother’s occupation was shown as Charwoman. Also at the address were Joseph’s sister Eliza aged 18, Occupation cotton winder, and his brothers George aged 22 finisher and John aged 9. It would appear that Joseph married Eliza The 1871 census showed that Joseph aged 26, cordwainer and his wife Eliza aged 24 were living at Pasture Lane Court, Leicester. They had one child : Alexander – 4 months The 1881 census showed that Joseph aged 35 and Eliza aged 34 were living at 35 Pingle Street, Leicester. Joseph’s occupation was shown as Shoe Riveter and Eliza’s occupation was shown as shoe machinist. They now had 3 children : 1871 Alexander – aged 10 1873 Thomas - aged 8 Alexander – 4 months A cordwainer is a shoe maker but a highly skilled one. Not to be confused with cobblers

Joseph’s occupation was shown as Shoe The 1881 census showed that Joseph aged 35 and Eliza aged 34 were living at 35 Pingle Street, Leicester. Joseph’s occupation was shown as Shoe Riveter and Eliza’s occupation was shown as shoe machinist. They now had 3 children : 1871 Alexander – aged 10 1873 Thomas - aged 8 1881 Frederick The 1891 census showed that Joseph aged 46 shoe riveter and Eliza aged 45 machinist were living at 9 Cumberland Street, Leicester. Three of their children were living at home : Alexander – aged 20 shoe riveter Thomas Crosby – aged 18 shoe riveter Frederick - aged 10 scholar The 1901 census showed that Joseph aged 56 boot shoe factory stoker (stationery engine) and Eliza Pike aged 53 were living at 78 Sanvey Gate, Leicester. Only one son was shown at the address :   Frederick aged 20 – occupation Insurance agent collector.

  33. ALEXANDER PIKE Alexander was born about 1870 at Leicester, his parents were Joseph and Eliza Pike. The 1871 census showed that Alexander aged 4 months was living with his parents,Joseph aged 26, cordwainer and his wife Eliza aged 24 at Pasture Lane Court, Leicester. The 1881 census showed that Alexander aged 10 was living with his parents, Joseph aged 35 and Eliza aged 34 at 35 Pingle Street, Leicester. Joseph’s occupation was shown as Shoe Riveter and Eliza’s occupation was shown as shoe machinist. Also at the address were Alexander’s brothers Thomas aged 8 and Frederick 5 months. The 1891 census showed that Alexander aged 20, shoe riveter was living with his parents, Joseph aged 46 shoe riveter and Eliza aged 45 machinist at 9 Cumberland Street, Leicester. Also at the address were Alexander’s brothers, Thomas Crosby aged 18 shoe riveter and Frederick aged 10 scholar. I believe that Alexander married Martha Carter between March and June, 1893.

  35. THOMAS CROSBY PIKE  Thomas was born about 1873 at Leicester, his parents were Joseph and Eliza Pike. The 1881 census showed that Thomas aged 8 was living with his parents, Joseph aged 35 and Eliza aged 34 at 35 Pingle Street, Leicester. The 1891 census showed that Thomas aged 18 shoe riveter was living with his parents, Joseph aged 46 shoe riveter and Eliza aged 45 machinist at 9 Cumberland Street, Leicester. Also at the address were Thomas’s brothers, Alexander aged 20 shoe riveter and Frederick aged 10 scholar. I believe that Thomas married Annie Giles between July and September 1894. The 1901 census showed that Thomas aged 28, occupation Shoe Booter and Annie aged 26, occupation shoe machinist were living at 45 Craven Street, Leicester, they had one son Horace aged 3 (1897)

  36. FREDERICK PIKE Frederick was born about 1881 at Leicester, his parents were Joseph and Eliza Pike. TThe 1881 census showed that Frederick aged 5 months was living wwith his parents, Joseph aged 35 and Eliza aged 34 at 35 Pingle Street, Leicester. Joseph’s occupation was shown as Shoe Riveter and Eliza’s occupation was shown as shoe machinist. Also at the address were Frederick’s brothers Alexander aged 10 and Thomas aged 8. The 1891 census showed that Frederick aged 10 scholar, was living with his parents, Joseph aged 46 shoe riveter and Eliza aged 45 machinist at 9 Cumberland Street, Leicester. Also at the address were Frederick’s brothers, Alexander aged 20, shoe riveter and Thomas Crosby aged 18 shoe riveter . The 1901 census showed that Frederick aged 20, occupation Insurance Agent Collector, was living with his parents, Joseph aged 56 boot shoe factory stoker (stationery engine) and Eliza Pike aged 53 at 78 Sanvey Gate, Leicester.

  37. JOHN PIKE John was born about about 1851 at Leicester, his parents were John and Elizabeth Pike. The 1861 census showed that John aged 9 was living with his parents, John aged 58 and Elizh. Aged 53 at 5 Hardys Yard, Leicester, John’s occupation was not show, and Elizh occupation was shown as charwoman. Also at the address was John’s brothers, George aged 22 occupation finisher, Joseph aged 16 and his sister Eliza aged 18 occupation cotton winder. The 1871 census showed that John aged 19 occupation shoe fitter was living with his parents, John aged 65 and Elizh. aged 64 at 5 Hardys Yard, Leicester, John’s occupation was shown as frame work knitter. I believe John married Mary Townsend between January and March, 1873 at Leicester. The 1881 census The 1891 census showed that John aged 38 and Mary aged 37 were living at 15 Mansfield Street, Leicester, John’s occupation was shown as Cab Proprietor. Also shown at the address was their son, William Pike aged 16, occupation spotter shoe trade
