  3. OBJECTIVES AND STANDARDS • 1.5: Students know the fundamental democratic principles that are a part of our government • Content Objective: Understand how the first amendment applies to public schools • Language Objective: Strengthen oral communication skills through a mock trial

  4. FIRST AMENDMENT Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

  5. What about in schools? • Brainstorm in groups what YOU think the rule is about First Amendment rights in schools. Do they apply the same way as they do in the “outside” world? Why or why not?
