  3. 13th Amendment • Officially makes slavery illegal in the United States • Southern states were required to ratify this amendment before they would be allowed back into the US

  4. 14th Amendment • Gave freed slaves citizenship status • Overturned decision in Dred Scot case • Gave all persons “due process “ of law • To be told of your crime when imprisoned, fair and speedy trial and right to attorney, etc • Gave all persons “equal protection” of the law • Law would protect everyone equally

  5. 15th Amendment • Gave all men the right to vote • No one can deny any man the right to vote based on any condition • Once a slave • Race

Political • Map • 5 Military districts-why did we set up military districts? • Explanation of how Southern States did not have totally “on-board” governments until the listed dates • White southerners do their best to hold freed African-Americans down and keep them from voting • poll tax, literacy test, grandfather clause • Black Codes – What were they? Economic • South’s devastated economy • Sharecropping • Agreement between landlord (owner of land) and poor farmer (usually African American freedman) to farm for a fee ($, crops, work, etc) • “Freedom’s Choices” sheet • ‘bought owner’s tools’; went into debt right away and couldn’t get out of it!

Social • Amounts of casualties – both North and South • North = approximately 360,000 (of 2.5 million or 14.4%) • South = approximately 260,000 (of 1 million or 26%) • Total is approximately 620,000 (of 3.5 million or 17.7%) • 2% of the US population at the time (31 million) • Would be 6 million today (a little more than the pop. of WI) • Over 2/3 from disease, not battle

  10. Social • Carpetbagger • Term for someone from the north who had come to the south after the war looking to make money • Lots of ways to do so • Sell needed items (food, clothing, etc) • Rebuild • Buy cheap land

  11. Social • Scalawag • Term for a southerner who was cooperative with the government’s reconstruction efforts in the south • Looked down upon by most southerners

  12. Social • Ku Klux Klan • White supremacist group • Claimed to use Christianity as a justification • Used terror tactics to scare African-Americans who • Were successful • Were trying to upset the established “hierarchy” • Were trying to blend with white culture
