  2. Objective: • I will make accurate inferences about the text at least 80% of the time. • I will use inferences to better comprehend a story. • I will cite evidence from the text to support my answer so that I know my inference is correct.

  3. Making Inferences • A story has two types of information: Fact and Inferences. • Facts are clearly stated in the story. • Inferences are conclusions you make based on the facts in the story. You use the facts as evidence to make your inference.

  4. An Inferencing Equation What I Read + What I know = What I Infer

  5. Examples: • The sun glistened on the new snow. Almost a foot had fallen since last night. Now the sky was clear. It was going to be a beautiful day. “A perfect day for sledding,” thought Jorge, as his bus pulled into the school parking lot. • Fact: There was snow. Facts are clearly stated in the passage. • Inference: Jorge would rather sled than be at school. You must infer this idea.

  6. Karl most wished that he hadn’t listened to the radio. He went to the closet and grabbed his umbrella. He would feel silly carrying it to the bus stop on such a sunny morning. 1. Which of these probably happened? a. Karl realized that he had a fear of umbrellas. b. Karl had promised himself to do something silly that morning. c. Karl had heard a weather forecast that predicted rain. d. Kalop planned to trade his umbrella for a bus ride.
