  1. POLECATS TEAM PRESENTATION MECHANICAL SECTION. Nathan Edge, 13/06/2011

  2. INTRODUCTION: TEAM MEMBERS • Team leader: Nathan Edge, 2nd year Mechanical Engineer @ Edinburgh University. • Other members: Jonathan Raines, 1st year Mechanical Engineer at Bristol, • Ben Couchman, 3rd year Mechanical Engineer at Cambridge (currently at MIT) • Assisted by Zoe Versey, the Systems team leader.

  3. OUR JOB... • Organisation of the individual experimental components within the module. • Design of CAD models (i.e. 3D software models) for the apparatus and the module. • Fulfilment of the thermodynamic requirements of the project (as in the REXUS user manual). • Derivation of the final experiment specifications, including final mass and mass moment of inertia, to the required detail. (e.g.: mass ± 0.5kg, each moment of inertia ± 0.1 kgm^2) Here’s one I made earlier...

  4. WHAT HAVE WE DONE SO FAR? • Organisation of the team, and getting everybody familiar with the REXUS user manual. • Research into thermodynamic requirements of the experiment. • Research into possible insulating materials (on the REXUS wiki...)

  5. WHAT HAVE WE DONE (cont’d) • Initial design on the outer module, which will house the experiment (pretty arbitrary... Eurolaunch provides the CAD model for selected experiments anyway) • Discussions regarding which CAD program should be used: this hinges on either AutoCAD or Inventor, both of which are free for students.

  6. SHORT-TERM PLANS • Decide on single CAD program, to be used throughout the whole project (this will be decided at camp). • Allocate CAD responsibility within the team (decided at camp/within the following week). • Decide on how the module will be vented.

  7. MID-TERM PLANS • Continue research on insulation/materials. • Create a suitable hatch design, using the below image as a template.

  8. MID-TERM PLANS (cont’d) • Liase with the other team members, for the placement of individual components-for example, the power source, the transmitter, etc. • It is extremely important that we do this soon, just to give us some breathing space later on in the project.

  9. LONG-TERM PLANS • Begin budgetary observations, and look for sponsors/manufacturers. • Begin calculation of specifications for the experiment. • Begin testing of the experiment, as mentioned in the user manual. • Not too much to worry about now... But it is important that we begin to think about this.

  10. FINALE... • Thank you very much for your attention.... • We’re really excited to be working with all of you... • Please remind me of anything I’ve forgotten... • Any questions?
