  2. What it is… A short reference to a famous event, person, book, etc. The writer assumes that the reader understands what is being referenced.

  3. Purpose Allusions are designed to liken whatever is happening in the work to another, similar, event. This can then be used to help clarify the subject of discussion.

  4. Examples • “Plan ahead: it wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark”– Richard Cushing • Alludes to Biblical event • Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck • Title alludes to Robert Burns poem
