  1. Mrs. Denton’s 3rd grade class 2011-2012

Who is Mrs. Denton?? • BA in Child Development from Cal State Northridge (CSUN) • MA in Educational Psychology from CSUN • Ed Specialist in Ed Leadership from U of I • taught in CA for 6 years before moving to Idaho in 2005 • 7th year in Meridian School District, 5th year at Mary Mac • taught 1-5th grades, preschool, and community college • wife and mother • enjoys a good book, funny movies, riding my bike, traveling, and spending time with my family

  3. What’s awesome about 3rd graders? • They’re curious about the world around them. • They still like being silly. • They still like being little kids sometimes. • They enjoy school. • They aim to please. • They’re becoming more independent, both in school and at home.

  4. What will we learn this year? • In Reading… • 120 words per minute by Spring • understand various types of text, learn about different genres • plot, setting, characters • dictionary and glossary skills (vocabulary) • use of predictions, context clues, and other reading strategies • use of questioning • cause and effect, compare and contrast • In Math… • various ways to solve problems • double-digit addition and subtraction • multiplication • measurement • telling time • counting money • gather data and create graphs, tables and charts • place value to 10,000 • develop an understanding of fractions • study 2D shapes and their attributes

The Daily 5 – What is it??? • Teaching the students to organize and manage themselves. • Teaching the students how to find a good fit book. • Learning to love reading and writing, and gaining the independence to do these activities on their own. • Read to Self • Everyday Work (reading comp., and language practice) • Word Work (vocabulary and spelling) • Writing • Reading Groups

  6. What will we learn this year? • In Science? • the reason for the seasons • states of matter • simple machines • relationships within ecosystems • In Social Studies? • Communities past and present • culture • economics • geography • government • history

  7. More fun things we’ll do this year… • cursive writing • Art Smart • field trips Meridian High School’s FFA program (Oct. 3rd) district-wide 3rd grade Orchestra trip (Jan)

  8. Celebrations • Classroom celebrations for good behavior/job well done • Holidays Halloween/Harvest, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Spring Fling • Birthdays acknowledgement in class with song and card from friends 3 parties/year to celebrate, one per trimester

  9. Homework in our class… • Packet goes home on Thursday, and is due the following Thursday • Includes reading, math, and spelling • Student is expected to read at home for 20 min. 5 nights/week

  10. How can you help this year? • At school… • work with small groups • make copies • change bulletin boards • go on field trips • help with special projects • plan/throw parties • At home… • help with special projects • help your child with homework
