  1. IEC Report to E10D-Fall 2008 Presentation by Ken Bow

  2. IEC Technical Report TR6XXX • Conductors of Insulated cables - Data for AWG and kcmil Sizes • Step 1 of a 3 step process • Recommended by Study Group 60228 • Means of introducing “AWG” sizes into the IEC system • Provides resistance and dimensional detail including metric cross-sections

  3. Driving Forces • IEC TC 20 recognizes need to produce a single harmonized standard • Not intended for data cable, communications cable or winding wire • AWG Sizes: 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 1 • 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 • Kcmil sizes:250, 350, 500, 750, 1000, 1250, 1750, 2000

  4. Procedure • Stage 1: Produce TR with a range of AWG/kcmil conductors (24 AWG to 2000 kcmil) • Stage 2: Develop TR into IEC Standard/Align with IEC 60228 • Stage 3: Produce new standard with a single rationalized range of conductor sizes (by 2020) • Long term project
