  1. Writing a Thesis and Introductory Paragraph SHD 2013

  2. You should have already: • Completed your T-chart • Picked “yes, SHD was justified” or “no, SHD was not justified” • Picked four pieces of evidence. Two pieces should be matched to one PERSIA GEM, the other two need to be matched to a different PERSIA GEM. • Completed your body paragraph G.O.s

  3. Using Claims to Write a Thesis • Look at each of your claims. Turn your claims into short clauses • Example: “Is Starbucks justified in charging such high prices for its coffee?” Claim 1: Starbucks offers its customers several beverage options which attracts and retains customers. Claim 2: Starbucks provides diverse amenities which causes customers to remain, and purchase more. Clause 1: more choices Clause 2: relaxing environment

  4. The components of a Thesis • You must acknowledge something about the opposite argument which will make your argument look superior. • You must state, simply, your position. • You must previewyour evidence using the clauses you have made. Example: Although Dunkin Donuts is less expensive, Starbucks coffee is worth the higher price because it offers coffee drinkers more choices and a relaxing environment. You may combine the clauses: a more individualized experience.

  5. Introductory Paragraph • Must contain three parts: • Early sentences  grab reader’s attention Americans purchase coffee in unprecedented amounts on the go, and they want their coffee to be an experience, not just a beverage. Starbucks offers that experience, what they have created is not just a transaction, but a front porch experience, where the community matters. 2. Historical context  5Ws and H Starbucks began in 1971 in Seattle, Washington and quickly grew into a global coffee company and coffee house chain through innovation and fair trade practice. It has outperformed many of its competitors. 3. Thesis Statement  you’ve made it! Although Dunkin Donuts is less expensive, Starbucks coffee is worth the higher price because it offers coffee drinkers more choices and a relaxing environment.

  6. Try it! • Open Safari • Login to GoogleDrive • Open your SHD Instructions packet in desktop mode so you can edit it. • Find the page titled “Develop a Thesis Statement.” • Create your Thesis. Then, create your Introductory Paragraph. Finish both for HW.
