Research • Night time reading year 1 • recent successful tenure cases at your institution • recent successful Career grants in your area and from your institution • Every year • keep detailed records • review your progress with your department chair and some other senior faculty mentor • What are the research criteria? • Papers in top conferences, journals, funding, etc. • Meet and greet • Introductions to NSF/Darpa program managers • Introductions to industrial contacts • Collaborate • your colleagues have trained students

Teaching • Appropriate course choices • undergraduate course you can teach repeatedly • graduate course you can use to screen and train students • seminars for advanced training • TA support and good TAs • Invest in being a decent teacher • “the right thing” • get it right quickly and both you and the students will find it more rewarding • Department & University seminars • Teaching software & remote question systems • Mentor evaluations
