  3. Some Language… Current TEKS – TEKS we have been teaching for years and will continue to teach for 2013-2015 (HS) or 2013-2014 (K-8) 2012 TEKS – New TEKS approved in 2012 to be implemented as per…
  4. When? HS (b) No later than June 30, 2015, the commissioner of education shall determine whether instructional materials funding has been made available to Texas public schools for materials that cover the essential knowledge and skills for mathematics as adopted in §§111.39-111.45 of this subchapter. (c) If the commissioner makes the determination that instructional materials funding has been made available under subsection (b) of this section, §§111.39-111.45 of this subchapter shall be implemented beginning with the 2015-2016 school year and apply to the 2015-2016 and subsequent school years. 10. Mathematical Process Standards (b) Introduction (2) The process standards… General comments…
  11. Mathematical Process Standards (c) Knowledge and Skills. (1) Mathematical process standards. The student… (A)… Other Specifics… In Summary…
  12. Mathematical Process Standards Mathematical process standards. The student uses mathematical processes to acquire and demonstrate mathematical understanding. The student is expected to: (A)  apply mathematics to problems arising in everyday life, society, and the workplace; (B)  use a problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information, formulating a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and evaluating the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution;
  13. Mathematical Process Standards (C) select tools, including real objects, manipulatives, paper and pencil, and technology as appropriate, and techniques, including mental math, estimation, and number sense as appropriate, to solve problems; (D)  communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning, and their implications using multiple representations, including symbols, diagrams, graphs, and language as appropriate;
  14. Mathematical Process Standards E)  create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas; (F)  analyze mathematical relationships to connect and communicate mathematical ideas; and (G)  display, explain, and justify mathematical ideas and arguments using precise mathematical language in written or oral communication.
  15. Strands
  16. Strands:Algebra I
  17. Strands:Geometry
  18. Strands:Algebra II
  19. Strands:Pre-Calculus
  20. Strands:Grades 6-8
  21. Personal Financial Literacy:Kindergarten Personal financial literacy. The student applies mathematical process standards to manage one's financial resources effectively for lifetime financial security. The student is expected to: (A) identify ways to earn income; (B) differentiate between money received as income and money received as gifts; (C) list simple skills required for jobs; and (D) distinguish between wants and needs and identify income as a source to meet one's wants and needs.
  22. Personal Financial Literacy:Grade 8 Personal financial literacy. The student applies mathematical process standards to develop an economic way of thinking and problem solving useful in one's life as a knowledgeable consumer and investor. The student is expected to: (A) solve real-world problems comparing how interest rate and loan length affect the cost of credit; (B) calculate the total cost of repaying a loan, including credit cards and easy access loans, under various rates of interest and over different periods using an online calculator; (C) explain how small amounts of money invested regularly, including money saved for college and retirement, grow over time;
  23. Personal Financial Literacy:Grade 8 (D) calculate and compare simple interest and compound interest earnings; (E) identify and explain the advantages and disadvantages of different payment methods; (F) analyze situations to determine if they represent financially responsible decisions and identify the benefits of financial responsibility and the costs of financial irresponsibility; and (G) estimate the cost of a two-year and four-year college education, including family contribution, and devise a periodic savings plan for accumulating the money needed to contribute to the total cost of attendance for at least the first year of college.

  28. New Standards (!) Three types of “new” standards: Standards we already teach… “I already do this.” Standards we should be teaching already… “I need to be doing this.” Completely new standards… “This is new to me.” Instructional Considersations!
  29. Some Examples – Algebra I Already do? Need to be doing? Completely new?

  32. Side-by-Side Analysis Analyze new standard with their current standards through the lens of instructional considerations Two contexts: considerations for full implementation in 2015-2016 gaps I need to help fill right now
