  1. Dead Pigeon

  2. Classification • Kingdom – Animalia • Eukaryotic, Heterotrophic • Phylum – Chordata • Nerve chord, notochord, post-anal tail • Class – Aves • Feathers, Production of eggs, Endothermic • Order – Columbiforms • Doves and pigeons

  3. Animals Related Pigeons are related to dodo birds and doves.

  4. Habitat • Urban areas • Temperate and Tropical Woodlands • Also found in: > Grasslands > Fields > Deserts • Pigeons are completely terrestrial

  5. Movement • hollow air-filled bones so that it lightens the weight • thoracic vertebrae fused together • keep the body stiff during flight • keeled sternum for attachment of flight muscles • Made up of cartilage

  6. Movement

  7. Feeding • What do they eat? • Fruit and seeds (mainly herbivores) • Some groups eat insects • How they eat? • Uses its sharp beak to pick at food • Uses a gizzard to crush food • What kind of animals eat pigeons? • Cats, Eagle owl, and foxes

  8. Circulation/Respiration • Pigeons have a four chambered heart • Closed circulatory system • Birds have four pulmonary veins > Humans only have one • Average bird devotes about 1/5th of its body volume to its respiration > Versus 1/20th in mammals

  9. Reproduction • At age of six months they reach sexual maturity • Hey lay eggs every 30-45 days > Usually first egg is laid in the afternoon > The 2nd egg is laid in the morning 2 days later • Eggs weight is approximately 25g • Gestation is 17 days

  10. Pigeon egg in comparison to chicken egg

  11. Nervous System • Avian nervous system consists of: > Central nervous system, (brain & spinal chord) • Brains are laced with tiny magnetic particles called magnetite > Respond to magnetic fields

  12. Dissection

  13. Interesting facts • In some species of birds, their air-filled bones are so light weight that the bird’s feathers weigh more than it’s entire skeleton • Pigeons were trained and used to deliver messages • Researchers studying pigeons have learned that pigeons are able to read all the letters of the alphabet if taught • Cher Ami is a famous pigeon known as a hero because he delivered a message during World War I • Cher Ami was shot twice while trying to deliver the message once in the breast and the left leg but despite being shot Cher Ami never gave up and successfully delivered the message
