  1. Reminder: P2 Due Today. 14th Nov 2011Task 4: AFL: Group Communication TaskAssessmentLO: To reflect on the targets you set yourself last week in your one – to –one communication assessment to help you complete your group communication assessment. To show your understanding of the key communication skills we have been looking at in this unit of workby participating in a group discussion. To reflect on your participation in a group discussion and your use of key communication skills. (Self Assessment & peer assessment) Starter 1 In your groups of 4 – use the whiteboards to show the 6 key stages of the communication cycle – in order please! 2 Now use another white board to brainstorm all the key communication skills that you can remember. 6/7mins

  2. Recap - The 6 stages of the Communication Cycle • Ideas occur • Message decoded - how are you going to say it? • Message sent • Message received – the other person senses you have sent a message. • Message decoded – the other person has to interpret that message. • Message understood – if you have communicated clearly, the other person has concentrated and there are no barriers, the other person understands your idea thus they show they understand by giving you the appropriate feedback. The communication cycle describes the way in which communication involves thinking, perception and checking understanding. It is called a ‘cycle’ because it is a process that keeps ‘going round’ and repeating itself. You are going to be assessed on it again today as part of a group discussion

  3. How to communicate effectively: • Active listening • Body language: non verbal such as: expressions/ eye contact/ posture • Use of appropriate language • Clarification – being clear on what you are saying • Tone of voice – assertive but not rude • Pace – not too fast/ not too slow • Proximity • Taking turns – NO butting in. • Assertiveness – Avoid getting argumentative

  4. Your Assessment Task (P4/M2/D1) You are going to take part in a group conversation. The conversation will be recorded so you can watch it back and assess yourself afterwards. You should aim to: join in equally in the group conversation, take turns, be clear - clarifying where necessary and using appropriate language. You should be working on both verbal and non verbal communication skills to communicate effectively with all of the group. Avoid being aggressive thus using a calm assertiveness when putting over your point of view. Your Assessment criteria is: To successfully participate in the discussion showing and practicing key communication skills (P4),to identify barriers of communication and set targets to overcome in the future (M2), to reflect on and evaluate strengths and weaknesses in both C tasks – P3 & P4 (D1) Recap Task: Read over the 10 key skills listed on your assessment sheet which you will be assessed on.

  5. Grading Criteria

  6. Your Topic? A strict uniform code is essential to ensure good discipline and high results in schools eg if students are expected to dress smart & professional every day for school then they will feel important, confident & part of an important organisation thus they will behave impeccably , try hard and achieve their best in their exams. Think about it: Is it really all down to uniform, is uniform just one of several important things that will make pupils achieve their best? Warm up Task: • Think about whether you agree or disagree with the statement and make notes on why or why not. • What important points do you want to raise in the discussion? • Now reflect on your targets from last week - write them down on your handout. • Write your target grade at the top of your handout. 8 mins

  7. Some key rules to follow: • Please put your full name on the piece of coloured card you have been provided with. • You may use the cards if necessary as a sign to speak . • Everyone must make a quick tick on their card every time they make a contribution to speak. • Please speak clearly so everyone can hear you

• I want all the group discussions to go on for least 12/15mins to ensure everyone gets a chance to make at least 3/4 points each – remember you are on camera . • It is not about how much you say or how loud you speak but what you say and the way in which you communicate in the group discussion Students who refuse to participate will obviously not meet the pass criteria for this assessment.. 12/15 mins

  9. AFL – Assessment for Learning What is your first reflection on how it went? • Using your coloured cards & whiteboards & grade yourself in your participation and appropriate use of key communication skills (P1) egclearpass, pass or not sure? (Ensure you leave space for other group members on your whiteboard who you will assess /next) . • Now compare cards and reflect on what everyone else said - Now grade all your group members~: clear pass/ pass/ not sure • Now hold up your boards for all group members to see what you have graded them – as a group discuss if there are any inconsistencies for any group member egif so why is this? • Now as a group try to agree on the most appropriate grades for all the group this time using the merit criteria too eg not only those pupils who participated well but who have also clearly identified the barriers and problems with the group discussion and ways forward : Merit/ Clear pass/ pass/ not sure Now everyone raise their whiteboards again – this time do you all agree? If not why not? 7 mins

  10. Self & Peer assessment with IRIS Watch/ look & listen: • Good participation • Good use of communication skills? • Barriers? • Targets? • Strengths & weaknesses?
