  4. Manifest Destiny: the belief that the United States had the right to expand its borders from sea to shining sea

  5. New Orleans, 1800 In the early 1800s, France controlled the Mississippi River, and Spain controlled the port of New Orleans. The United States used the Mississippi River to transport goods and people to New Orleans. In 1802, France bought the territory from Spain and closed the port of New Orleans to the United States.
