  2. What should we do with our 58 minutes a day? Choice A: • Review the previous night’s homework • Teacher lecture and take notes • Watch teacher work out example problems • Get a homework assignment of practice problems • No choice of assignment • Do your practice work at home Choice B: • Review the previous night’s lesson • Work out example problems on your own with teacher help • Have a choice of practice classwork assignments • Work on your practice work in class with help of students and teacher • Get a chance to work on extension problems to grow your knowledge

Actually you don’t get a choice… • We are going to attempt choice B: The Flipped Class • You get to be pioneers • You can pause, rewind, and re-watch lectures and example problems • No practice problems for homework • No struggling • You get a choice of the level of practice work you would like to attempt • Everyone should have a 100% or higher classwork grade

  4. You can count on me… • To review the material from the previous night’s video lesson • To still do some example problems in class • To assist you with the ability to view the video lectures • To let you work from the book if you prefer • To give you a choice of the level of classwork you would like to do • To help you apply the information during classwork • To push you to do your best, expand your horizons, and stretch your educational goals • To give you exposure to career connections and college readiness

I need to count on you… • To view the previous night’s video, take notes, and prepare for the next day of class. • To be flexible and find ways to access the video lesson from outside of class • To follow along and attempt the example problems in class • To use the textbook for information when needed • To be a good class-worker and stay on task • To try your best to apply the new information learned to the practice problems in class • To be open to expanding your horizons and educational goals

Why are we doing this? • Proven to be effective through research • You don’t have to struggle on practice problems on your own • You will have more opportunity to interact with the teacher and fellow students while you are in the classroom • Gives the teacher a chance to work with students who need extra help or guidance • Gives excelling students a chance to get their work done in class and show their brilliance by helping other students and extending their mathematical applications

  7. How do we do this? • You will get an “assignment” each night to watch a video and take notes (a notes page will be provided) • The teacher will quickly review this information at the beginning of class and the whole class will complete a few example problems together • The next day in class if your notes are complete you will get to choose a level of difficulty of practice problems for classwork • Level 2 – basic (grade = 2 out of 3 points) • Level 3 – proficient (grade = 3 out of 3 points) • Level 4 – exemplary (grade = 4 out of 3 points) • If your notes are not complete, then you will have to do that before the classwork • On review days, quiz days, and test days you may have normal homework assignments.

  8. How do I access the videos? • Class website has everything! • Find the appropriate class and the unit we are working on • Your notes page will tell you which video(s) to watch for “homework.” • www.novakwiki.wikispaces.com • YouTube channel: MrNGeometry (then find the right playlist) • When in doubt, go to YouTube and search for the title of the video
