  1. Re-writing what we Adrian Read Fogelin

  2. I have just one question… well maybe not just one… but it’s the one I’ll ask – Time to write…

  3. Quick Write In late September at the Fall Retreat, you’ll have a chance to ask author Adrian Fogelin questions about writing. Think about the questions that you might ask about… process characters plot setting word choice sensory details description sentence structure dialogue ???? Make a list of 3 or 4 things you’d like to know about writing and publishing books from a professional author (Adrian Fogelin).

  4. Next, think about the questions you’ve asked and take on the “persona” of author. Now answer the questions as if you’re the author answering the same questions you’ve written from your perspective.

  5. Care to Share Care to Share????

  6. Re-telling Fogelin’s story… It all began with a happy childhood and not getting that dog in 4th grade…

  7. But the author isn’t your story… • Author’s create stories out of their experience • They mix fact, fiction and imagination to create: • Setting • Characters • Plot • Point of View

  8. Points of View Which voice will you use today? Check out the point of view handout and decide which you’ll use!

  9. Getting from here to there Let’s map your course in retelling the story! • Where do we begin? • Who’s giving “directions”? • How do they know the detours? • Which route? • When do we get there? • What’s our destination?

  10. What’s your story???? • Where does your RE-telling of the story begin? • Your story is from whose point of view? (REmember to be consistent!) What’s your point of departure? Who’s giving the directions?

  11. Re-telling, Re-mixing, Re-membering • Retell it from one point of view • Re-mix what you know, being true to what happened but selecting details that tell “just enough” • Remember to credit the author – it’s your telling of her work!

  12. Writing Time! Your task is to: • Use the Re-Telling Worksheet to map out the retelling of one of Fogelin’s books or piece of writing your own writing from a DIFFERENT point of view.

  13. Time to Share…

  14. Building a Quest Requires… • The topic • The details • The purpose • The software or online site Zunal.com

  15. Parts of a Quest Title Introduction Task Process Conclusion Evaluation

  16. Editing for Your Story • Edit the Headings • Figure out What you Want them to do! • Select and download pictures from secure online sites. • Ask for help if you need it!!!

  17. TIME TO CREATE!!! But how does it work for our writing? What you’ll need: • Your plan • An idea of what you want the reader to do • Your Imagination!!!

  18. What did you learn? • About one of Adrian Fogelin’s work? • About creating a webquest? Time to Try it on Your Own! • Create a quest of your own retelling of your Fogelin book, or… • Create a webquest featuring a piece of your own writing… leading your reader through the piece on their own reading adventure that connects to real life or real places.

  19. Introduction – how are you going to introduce the story? • Point of view (remember… I, he/she – go back to the worksheet to review) • What’s the story you want to tell? Make notes to tell the part of the story/novel that you want to introduce to the reader (this is like a commercial, not the whole thing) • The Task – what do you want your reader to do? What does he/she need to do in this quest? • If it is a telling of Fogelin’s story, what exactly is your reader going to do to learn what they need to know. • Are you telling it alone, or are you having them compare the same part of the story told from two points of view (you and your partner’s)? Need to Know…

  20. Process – Lead your reader through the quest by telling him/her what the process (story) is OR rename “process” and decide what you’ll create with this part of the quest (The Story) to give your readers the details you want them to learn/know. • Evaluation – How are you scoring what your reader learned? How will they know they’ve done a good job? • Conclusion – Wrap it up for the reader. Congratulate them for finishing their quest!

  21. Meet another side of author Adrian Fogelin

  22. Author’s Chair • Today’s author’s chair is a gallery walk of Zunals. • Share the virtual walk with a partner • Quiet, inside voices so everyone can enjoy their own ‘walk’ • Leave notes on the Quest page about what you liked about the quest you visited (these will be put up on the wall in the morning)
