UP Stands First in Setting Up Compressed Biogas Plants in India

India has constantly emphasized on the need of using compressed biogas. Petroleum Ministry of India is all geared up to setup more than 5000 biogas upgradation systems in India by the year 2023. Uttar Pradesh leads with 129 projects across the state while Maharashtra and Haryana follow with 75 and 59 projects respectively.

  1. UP Stands First in Setting Up Compressed Biogas Plants in India =========================================================================================== India has constantly emphasized on the need of using compressed biogas. This initiative will also help reduce the reliance on imported energy whilst reducing the carbon footprint. It is known to everyone how the national capital region suffers from unbelievable amount of pollution due to stubble burning every year during the winter. The Data Says it All! There were 515 LOI (Letters of intent) sent out to biogas companies in India. The letters were aimed at encouraging these companies to setup compressed biogas plants across the country. Uttar Pradesh leads with 129 projects across the state while Maharashtra and Haryana follow with 75 and 59 projects respectively. There are 35 plants in Andhra and 24 in Punjab. Seven plants were present in Delhi as well. That’s not all. This ambitious project is looking to cover as many Indian states as possible. According to the data the following states have already been given the permission to setup certain number of plants. The total cost of setting up these plants for biogas productionis estimated to be about Rs. 15000 Crore. 1

The SATAT Scheme has already been talked about the lot. Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation Scheme also known as SATAT Scheme came into existence to produce huge amount of compressed biogas in order to reduce our reliance on imported energy. A significant 15 million metric tonnes of compressed biogas can be produced in these biogas production plants. There is no shortage of biomass sources in India. Agricultural residue, cattle dung, municipal waste from sewage treatment plants, and sugarcane press mud are some of the biomass sources. You must know that anaerobic decomposition is the process used for producing biogas. Later, biogas purification process takes places in which hydrogen sulphide, carbon di-oxide and water vapor are removed to produce high quality compressed biogas with more than 90 percent methane in it. Addressing the big problem of stubble burning Pollution due to stubble burning is a huge problem that looms large in India between September and October every year. They burn roughly 35 million tonnes of crop waste in an attempt to get rid of them. Compressed biogas plants can be a great source of income to these farmers. 2

  3. By setting biogas to bio-cng plant the government is eyeing at reducing the import dependence by 10 percent in the next two years. As of now, about 50 percent of our natural gas requirement is fulfilled by imports, but this scenario seems to be changing in the coming years.
