  1. Configuration Management and Change Control at Sellafield Configuration Management

  2. Workshop introduction • Who we are • What we’ll cover • Why it’s important

  3. What do you think Sellafield Ltd is?

  4. What is Configuration Management? • Defined by BS ISO 10007:2017 • “Configuration management is a management activity that applies technical and administrative direction over the life cycle of a product and service, its configuration identification and status, and related product and service configuration information. Configuration management documents the product or service configuration. It provides identification and traceability, the status of achievement of its physical and functional requirements, and access to accurate information in all phases of the life cycle.” Sellafield’s approach is based on international standards that are not specific to the nuclear industry

  5. What is required to be there Must conform Must conform Work processes ensure: • Elements conform all of the time • All changes are authorised • Conformance can be verified Must conform What is actually there What we say is there

  6. Change Control • Configuration Management is easy if the triangle is static, but this is not realistic • Change controls are required to keep all the points of the triangle in equilibrium and must be used whenever any of the points are affected Question: When do we start applying Configuration Management/Change Control and when do we stop?

  7. Asset Lifecycle Configuration Management and Change Control applied throughout the lifecycle of the asset.

  8. Background of Configuration Management at Sellafield • Legacy records going back to the foundation of the nuclear site in 1950’s • Information stored in various formats in separate repositories • Robust processes in place to manage change but these are paper based and dependent on manual effort.

  9. Change Control in numbers Hundreds of buildings Millions of drawings and documents Dozens of information repositories

  10. Change Control in Numbers 37km

  11. Change Control in Numbers Up to 45 SME’s/Areas

  12. Issues with current status • Sellafield Ltd does not employ Pope Pius IX • Large quantities of paperwork • Manpower is pulled into administering the process rather than the process itself • Disparate formats and locations of information make retrieval and change management time consuming

  13. What do we want to improve? • Reduction in burden • Better connectivity of information to the asset • Improved information accessibility and retrieval • Common asset information standards across the enterprise • Better flow of information across the full lifecycle of the asset
