  2. sales@bladespowergeneration.com +44 (0) 1453 799655 At Blades Power Generation we have noticed a considerable increase in enquiries for both new and used standby electricity generators over the last few months. No doubt this is because of the imminent possibilities of power outages, as a result of a number of factors. Climate change is one, as it is bringing more severe storms, particularly to the north of England and Scotland, and this can result in power lines coming down, and indeed has done. Another factor is the war in Ukraine which is resulting in many countries trying to reduce reliance on Russian gas for obvious reasons. Yet another is the threat of rail strikes starting any minute which may go on for months. All of these combined means that power outages are more likely to happen on an ongoing basis such as we have never seen since the 3-day week in 1973/1974. Fifty years ago! Who would have thought it? Installing a generator in your home or business will ensure that you always have a supply of electricity no matter what happens. Let’s face it, we all rely on electricity today more than ever before. What would we do without our laptops? What about our mobiles? If you have no electricity, you can’t charge your mobile, and in a day or two you are cut off from family and friends. Not to mention cooking your dinner or sitting in the dark with no TV and no news!

  4. sales@bladespowergeneration.com +44 (0) 1453 799655 There are two possible ways of switching over to your generator when the power goes down. You can either have an automatic transfer switch or a manual transfer switch. Of the two, an automatic transfer switch is preferable because it does what it says on the tin. When the power goes down, the automatic transfer switch notices it, fires up your generator, and within seconds switches over to it from the mains, so you will hardly know it happened. A manual transfer switch does cost less than an automatic one but has the disadvantage that you have to switch over manually, as you might have gathered. That means that you have to go outside to your generator (no fun if there is a storm) and start it up. Then when it is fully running you have to switch over from the mains. There is also the question of what happens if you are away on holiday, for instance. Your freezer is going to go down, and you will lose all the food in it. You may also need to keep an aquarium of tropical fish at the right temperature. All things considered, an automatic transfer switch is the preference for most people.
