  2. CH 1. Your Health and Wellness How healthy are you in all of these areas? • Physical • Mental/Emotional • Social. Health: Is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well being. Remember that being healthy means you will strive to be the best you can be at any given time.

  3. Health Continuum • Health continuum is a concept that states “your health is always changing”. • Example: One minute you could be playing football and the next day you could wake up sick. Below is what is at both ends of the health continuum : Premature Death ------ High Level of Health Remember Health is always changing!

  4. Wellness • Wellness: is an overall state of well-being, or total health. To achieve wellness it requires an on going, lifelong commitment to PMSE. Remember you need all of HEALTH (PMS(E)) to have WELLNESS!

  5. Promoting Your Health • Lifestyle Factors : Personal behaviors related to the way a person lives. This will determine his or her level of health. • Lifestyle Factors • 8-10 hours of sleep • Eating Breakfast daily • Eating a variety of food groups • Maintain a health weight or low obesity levels. • Avoid Tobacco, Alcohol, and other drugs. • Abstain from sex before marriage • Manage stress • Maintain a positive relationship’s • Practice safe behaviors to prevent injuries • Have physical activity for at least 20-30minutes a day for 3-4 days a week.

  6. Prevention and Health • Prevention: practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury. • Example: Wear seat belts, sunscreen, etc... • If a smoker go outside or walk away from a nonsmoker.

  7. Health Education • Health Education: The providing of accurate health information to help people make healthy choices. • Health Literacy: Refers to a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services and use these resources to promote his or her health / wellness.

  8. Health Literate • Health literate individual needs to be: • A critical thinker and problem solver • A responsible, productive citizen • A self directed learner • An effective communicator

Healthy People 2010 • HP 2010: is a nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan designed to serve as a guide for improving the health of all people in the United States. • Goals(2): • 1. To increase quality and years of healthy life for all Americans. • 2. To remove health differences that result from factors such as gender, race, education, disability, and location.

  10. Health People 2010 • Individuals: Take an active role in their own health. • Families: To teach children the values and skills necessary to maintain good health. • Communities: To provide health services and offer behavior changing classes to take steps to ensure a safe environment.

  12. Heredity • Heredity: refers to all the traits that were biologically passed on to you from your parents. • Physical Traits • Disease • Addiction • Looks • Social Traits • Behavior • Attitudes • Mental Traits

  13. Environment: Sum total of your surroundings. • Physical • Where you live • Social • Peers • Culture: the collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group. • Attitude • Behavior • Media • Technology

  14. Ch. 1 (Lesson 3) • Risk behaviors: are actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. • Make sure you can recognize a risky behavior • Unhealthy diets • Drug use • Sexual behaviors • Physical inactivity • Simple things like not wearing a seat belt or helmet. Cumulative Risk: related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. Example: Smoking and getting sunburns. It’s more than one risk factor added together.

  15. Abstaining from Risk Behaviors • Abstinence: avoiding harmful behaviors. Example: not using drugs or avoiding sexual behaviors. • How you behave affects not only yourself but others around you. • The End!
