  1. Step One:1-Problem Statement 2-Purchasing the Hardware Shervin Taghavi Nezhad Weekly Report July 10, 2008

  2. Problem Statement • Two different geometries are considered: • Major improvements that are sought: • Reduce turbulence • Changing the choking position • Reducing exit velocity

  3. Numerical Experiments • 2D: FLUENT • Conditions • Axisymmetric • No Silencer • Off struts • Objective • Optimum mesh density • Flow parameters including preferred Turbulence model • Determine the physics driving the acoustics • 3D: FLUENT • 60 degree section • With and without silencer • Flow physics at both strut and non-strut locations • NASA Code: MGBK • Developed for predicting: • Mixing noise (small scale turbulence) • Shock noise

  4. Turbulence Models • Steady • RANS • K-epsilon • Unsteady • LES (time steps ~10-4 -10-5 sec)

  5. Hardware • Options: • Buying a system from Dell • Building up our own system

  6. Dell Offerings • Dell: • Precision • T3400 • T5400 and T7400 use xeon CPU and are about $1000 more expensive • OptiPlex (755) • Vostro (400 and 410)

  7. Minimum Requirements • Most Important parts • CPU  Interl Core 2 Quad • RAM  4-8 GB • Hard Drive  minimum: 160 GB • Operating System • Linux • Windows (price difference depends on the model; e.g. for precision it is almost negligible whereas for OptiPlex it is ~$70)

  8. CPU • Dell offers on Precision:

  9. CPU • Dell Offer on OptiPlex

  10. CPU • Dell Offer on Vostro

  11. CPU selection • What we can buy ourselves: • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz, 2x4MB, 1066MHz)  $210 • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 (2.66GHz, 2x4MB, 1066MHz)  $275 • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 (2.66GHz, 12MB, 1333MHz) $330 • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 (2.5GHz, 6MB, 1333MHz) $270 • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 (2.83GHz, 12MB, 1333MHz) $550

  12. Memory • Precision

  13. Memory • OptPlex

  14. Memory • Vostro

  15. Memory • 4GB DDR2 SDRAM, 800MHz (2 DIMM) $80-$90 • 8GB DDR2 SDRAM, 800MHz (4 DIMM) $180 • 16GB DDR2 SDRAM, 800MHz (4 DIMM) $1050

  16. Overall Price • Precision: ~$1900-2000

  17. Overall Price • OptiPlex: ~$1200

  18. Overall Price • Vostro 400: ~$710

  19. Overall Price • Vostro 410: ~$1200

  20. Other Components Prices • Motherboard: ~$100 • Hard Drive: ~$60 for 250GB • Video Card: ~$40 • Case: ~$70 • DVD-ROM: ~$20 • Mouse & Keyboard: ~$20 • Overall Price: • $330 (CPU)+$180 (RAM)+$300 (else)=~$800

  21. Other Issues • We must add about %15-%20 to all the prices to account for TAX and Shipment • Delivery times would be between 3-7 working days
