  1. Subject Knowledge Environment (SKE): Development and Application in CAS Jinxia Huang

  2. OUTLINE • SKE project • Project Deliverables • Related work • Approach • Functionality • Applications in CAS

  3. SKE project — Funded by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) — One of a series of projects on Chinese Science Digital Library (CSDL) in National Science Library (NSL) —2009: research on the key technologies of SKE and system construction; 2010: application

  4. Project Deliverables — Subject Knowledge Environment of CAS, a platform to support the collection, organization and integration on the different types of information, which is used by scientists in Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and librarians. —Software on knowledge Environment, which will be provided to institutions or research groups in CAS who have the needs to develop their own knowledge Environments.

  5. Related work — Literature Review Virtual Research Environment (VRE) Semantic Web ( on systems and technologies) Research on User behaviors in Virtual Research Environment — Survey Knowledge Organization System (KOS) Semantic web ( on ontologies ) Websites of some institutes of CAS Social Network Services (SNS) Needs for Science & technology information development Reference: http://ir.las.ac.cn

  6. Approach • SKE overall architecture

  7. Approach • Knowledge organization system Questions: how to organize and integrate the different kinds of information? how to develop a KOS model to support SKE? general resources ontology subject ontology Ontology model

  8. Goals Process Results Integrate the information; Share knowledge List the important terms in the research work Confirm two-ontology model Generate the different-level of classesand properties Edit the ontologies Build the demo system to evaluate the ontologies Needs + Evaluations + Adjustment Ontology Generation : Subject librarians of NSL Researchers and Graduate students in CAS Institute Librarians Librarians on Collection development of NSL Librarians on Information Science and Technology of NSL

  9. Scientific data Subject News and bulletin Equipments and service Academic Events Projects Publications People Research products Research units Resources Research managements Job opportunity and students’ recruitment The classes and relationships in Ske ontologies

  10. Approach • SKE platform Construction Questions: how to develop SKE system? how to provide the user customization in SKE? how to control the user authorization in different portals? System Development based onVitro Vitro’ localization: 1) rebuilding the webpage 2) translating into Chinese 3) developing four user roles and the user authorization 4) deveoping new functions …….

  11. Approach • SKE platform Construction new functions: 1) develop the class trees 2) add the browsing- road map 3) develop the portal customization 4) provide the cross-search into other systems 5) provide the files upload or download in an instance 6) add some reasoning rules 7) add RSS (Really Simple Syndication )

  12. SKEFunctionality • Browse and search • Providing the user to browse and search the science & technology information which is shown in the different types, and search them in other systems from SKE. 2) Providing the relationship between different information 3) Providing the academic communities for scientists to communicate their knowledge and share their research productions 4) Developing an open platform for the librarians to integrate and organizethe information .

  13. Scene 1: A graduate student wishes to find everything in the topic”evolution” given by his mentor. Portal Search

  14. SKEFunctionality • Browse and search • Providing the user to browse and search the science & technology information which is shown in the different types, and browse them in other systems from SKE. 2) Providing ways to find the related information or different kinds of information 3) Providing the academic communities for scientists to communicate their knowledge and share their research productions 4) Providing an open platform for the librarians to integrate and organizethe information .

  15. Scene 2: A scientist hopes to know more about another scientist “Yaping Zhang” to whom he only knows the name. People’s linking Add reasoning rules Object property

  16. SKEFunctionality • Browse and search • Providing the user to browse and search the science & technology information which is shown in the different types, and browse them in other systems from SKE. 2) Providing the relationship between different information. 3) Providing the academic communities for scientists to communicate their knowledge and share their research productions 4) Developing an open platform for the librarians to integrate and organize the information

  17. Scene 3: A project team whose members come from seven research organizations hopes to find a tool to support communication, knowledge management and dissemination.

  18. SKEFunctionality • Browse and search • Providing the user to browse and search the science & technology information which is shown in the different types, and browse them in other systems from SKE. 2) Providing the relationship between different information. 3) Providing the academic communities for scientists to communicate their knowledge and share their research productions. 4) Developing an open platform for the librarians to integrate and organize the information.

  19. Scene 4: In order to promote the research work and provide library service, NSL subject librarian Wang wants to help the research group on ”plant evolution” to develop a knowledge management and sharing environment together.

  20. Application * Subject Knowledge Environment of CAS (http://ske.las.ac.cn)

  21. Application * Southwest Biodiversity Knowledge Environment (http://sbke.las.ac.cn) : * Biomedical and Health Knowledge Environment (http://health.las.ac.cn): Wuhan Institute of Virology, CAS: Knowledge management of a institute

  22. Application * Biomedical and Health Knowledge Environment (http://health.las.ac.cn): Wuhan Institute of Virology, CAS

  23. Further Work Problems unsolved now will be the goals of future work: 1. Ontology update and management? 2. Data ingest? 3. How to make relationships with other systems or services in the library? 4. Sustainable Development? The future of SKE?
