    3. Antoinette Beck 2007 Why do strategic planning? How long will it take? What should a strategic plan consist of? What is strategic planning?

    4. Antoinette Beck 2007 Strategic planning is important as this is focused planning by the whole school. Some principals feel they want to do the strategic planning by themselves as they lead the school, but in this day and age of democratic leadership, a co-operative strategic planning exercise by the whole school is vital in getting buy-in from everyone.

    5. Antoinette Beck 2007 So who should be included in this process? Include staff (teaching and non-teaching), parents and board members. Pupils can make a contribution through their LRC. This could be fed into the strategic planning meeting. This process will take a few weeks or even months – you will not be able to complete the whole exercise effectively in one sitting. It is also good to be able to step back and scrutinize what you have done.

    7. Antoinette Beck 2007 Vision and Mission and Values Close your eyes and think about the geese you’ve seen flying in formation overhead. Do they just fly in any direction that takes their fancy? They fly in tight formation – everyone using the slipstream created by the others to fly effectively. They all know where they are going. That is what a strategic plan with Vision, Mission and Core Values will do for your school.

Antoinette Beck 2007 The best way to come up with your Vision and Mission is to discuss ideas in small mixed groups and for a member of the school community to chair this session and collect ideas. The Vision is the overall goal the school envisions achieving. It can take the form of a slogan – do not confuse this with your school motto. This is a planning vision!

    9. Antoinette Beck 2007 The Mission is how you will get to the ultimate goal. You will list the attributes you need or the activities you undertake in your school to get to the Vision. For example: Vision: To be a proudly South African School at the top! Mission: WE strive to produce pupils who are firmly rooted in Christian values, who are able to think independently and are able to participate in the life of the country in a positive manner.

    10. Antoinette Beck 2007 What are the core values which inform all activities within your school? These are your values and should remain fixed. You can word it as you like, but an example would be: We believe in God, ourselves and each other and in developing the whole child to his or her full potential, we believe that outreach to others is essential and that the environment is a vital aspect of our lives.

    11. Antoinette Beck 2007 The different strategic areas in which planning is done are as follows: Staff, pupils, policies, curriculum, finance, premises and facilities, leadership, extra-mural, partnerships

    12. Antoinette Beck 2007 Staff Training and qualifications (Skills and Equity), working conditions and staff satisfaction, communication, appraisals, appointments, teamwork etc.

    13. Antoinette Beck 2007 Pupils Absenteeism, LRC, communication, syllabi, codes of conduct and behaviour, satisfaction, mentoring, counseling and guidance

    14. Antoinette Beck 2007 Policies Codes of conduct (staff and pupils), equity, skills, assessment, quality management system, health and safety, appeals and grievances (staff, parents and pupils), admissions, access and support, moderation, environmental, absenteeism and batting. Others?

    21. Antoinette Beck 2007 Procedure Do a SWOT analysis in groups for each of these areas and feed back to a plenary. From the Strengths, you are able to pat yourselves on the back. List all the weaknesses, opportunities and threats and use these as a springboard for your planning for the next 3 to 5 years. Divide into groups with each group working on one of the 7 focus areas to come up with a plan for the next 5 years.

    22. Antoinette Beck 2007 Once you have discussed and prioritized all the things you want to do, put them onto a table with the following headings. The following examples should help you. Performance indicators are things which you can see in order to ascertain that the activity has taken place.

    25. Antoinette Beck 2007 Create an operational plan – this is a one-year plan which will incorporate all your usual activities for the year and some of the strategic planning activities designated for that year. This should incorporate your running costs budget.
