  1. Dividing Mixed Numbers Objective(s): 1. Students will estimate quotients of mixed numbers 2. Students will understand the term reciprocal 3. Students will divide mixed numbers Lesson objectives

  2. 1. mixed --> improper 2. keep, change, flip 3. top x top bottom x bottom 4. simplify

  3. What do you need to know in order to divide
mixed numbers? - How to change a mixed number to an
improper fraction - How to find the reciprocal of a fraction - How to reduce (or cross-reduce) - How to multiply fractions - How to simplify fractions

  4. Dividing Fractions with Mixed Numbers Follow the steps for changing mixed numbers to improper fractions. Follow the steps for dividing fractions. NOTE: DO NOT CROSS REDUCE OR SIMPLIFY BEFORE DIVIDING Example: 3 1/5 ÷ 2 3/4 3 x 5 = 15 + 1 = 16/5 2 x 4 = 8 + 3 = 11/4 16 11  - ÷ - 5 4 (NOTE: DO not cross-reduce here!) Find the reciprocal 16 4  64 - x - = - 5 11  55 = 1 9/55

  5. Now you try one ... 2 3 1 - ÷ 3 - 3 4 4 - 9 Click For Answer

  6. What about this one??? 1 5 - ÷ 6 2 11 - 12 Click For Answer

  7. Independent Practice 1 1 5 - ÷ 2 - 3 4 10 2 - 27 Click For Answer
