  2. Company of 100 Associates • The King of France made a deal with The Company of 100 Associates: • The Company of 100 Associates got to be the only fur trading company • BUT… • The Company of 100 Associates was in charge of populatingNew France • The Company of 100 Associates also had to take care of roads, buildings, jails and a lot of other things

  3. Company of 100 Associates • The Company of 100 Associates DID NOT do a good job • It took a lot of furs from New France • It did not bring people to live in New France • The company did not care about the deal with the King

  4. FRANCE vs. ENGLAND • By 1645, New France was 4-5 times bigger than the English Colonies (New England) • But the English colonies had 5-6 times larger population. • This was bad for New France

  5. 1663: The King is in charge... • 1663: King Louis XIV (14th) • He took control of New France • Louis XIV had to become the boss of New France from Far away

  6. Lets get this place populated! • Louis XIV had to startpopulating New France • More women needed to live in New France • More women = MORE BABIES • King Louis XIV had a plan…

  7. King Louis XIV’s plan • Step 1: Send somebody to New France to populate it. • Jean Talon (intendant) • Step 2: Use a CENSUS to find out how many people actually lived in New France • A census helped find out how many women, men, children and families were in New France

  8. King Louis XIV’s plan • Jean Talon found out that New France had about 3500 people • This was NOT GOOD! • New England had about 20 000 people • Why is this a problem? • New England could easily take over New France

  9. King Louis XIV’s plan • Promote ‘engages’ • Ship over ‘filles du Roi’ • Encourage soldiers to stay in NF • Unwanted prisoners: people who committed non-violent crimes in France were asked to move to NF • Give people money for marrying and having kids

  10. ‘Engages’ • Regular men who moved to New France from France for about 3 years. • They got a job in New France • Paid a salary (money) • The boat trip to New France was paid for

  11. ‘Filles du Roi’ • Young women from France • 13-18 years old • Orphans OR their parents could not afford for them to live at home • They were sent to New France by boat • Had to marry within 15 days of arrival in New France • Why would Louis XIV do this?

  12. Soldiers • French soldiers were working in New France • The soldiers were from the “Carignan-Salieres” regiment • This was the same regiment that helped fight the mohawks • King Louis XIV asked soldiers to stay and live in New France • King Louis XIV promised to give them land to start a family

  13. Money for children • If parents had more than 10 children, King Louis would give them $100 per year • If a boy was married by age 20, he would get $20 • If a girl was married by age 16, she would get $20

  14. Important Document: Louis encourages births in the colony “ All the inhabitants of the country who have up to ten living legitimate children, who are not priests or clerics, will receive deniers that the majesty will send…in the form of 300 livresper year….In addition…all boys that marry by the age of 20 and girls who marry by the age of 16, be paid an amount of 20 livres on their wedding day… (and) a monetary fine be established… against fathers who do not marry their sons off by the age of 16.” -Ruling council of King Louis XIV
