  2. The need to imitate Jesus • 1 Cor. 11:1 • 1 John 2:6 • His life teaches us how to please God, how to deal with others, and how to live life with real purpose.

  3. In This Study • We will examine the events associated with the week that culminated in His death (and resurrection)

  4. In This Study • His triumphal entry • Events early in the week (cleansing the temple, cursing the fig tree, etc.) • Teachings about judgment and accountability • Instituting the Lord’s Supper

  5. In This Study • His betrayal and arrest • His trials and condemnation • The crucifixion of Jesus • His resurrection and its significance • His ascension and return

  6. The week that Changed History Up to this point, man was without hope (Eph. 2:12) Because of this week man has REAL HOPE with a REAL PLAN with REAL RESULTS!

  7. The week that Changed History Called “Passion week” Passion from Latin word meaning suffering. Such was descriptive of what Jesus endured.

  8. The week that Changed History “Passion week” The term also describes the passion He and His disciples exhibited during this week.

  9. The week that Changed History “Passion week” The term is NOT found in the Bible, but rather is part of the Catholic and denominational season culminating in “Easter” another unbiblical word.

  10. The week that Changed History “Passion week” However, while such special observances are without authority, the events they memorialize ARE worthy of examination and application in our lives. THIS IS OUR purpose in this study!

  11. The week that Changed History Substantial portions of the gospels devoted to the events of this week: Matthew 21-27 Mark 11-16 Luke 19:28-23:55 John 12-19

  12. The Life of Jesus The triumphal entry into Jerusalem

  13. His Triumphant Entry • Recorded in all 4 gospels • Matthew 21:1-11 • From Bethpage Jesus sends His disciples to retrieve a donkey and colt.Mark 11:3 – they would return it when done • Was this planned or divine intervention?

  14. His Triumphant Entry • Jesus is seated on the colt and crowds lined the way into Jerusalem. As He passed by they cast down their coats and palm branches (Jn. 12:13) before Him.

  15. His Triumphant Entry • As He approached they chanted, “Hosanna (“save, I Pray”) to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” (Matt. 21:9, cf. Psa. 118:26)

  16. His Triumphant Entry • The event was prophesied in Zech. 9:9). He entered with fanfare, but not as worldly nobles. • Lk. 19:39-40 – As He approached the Pharisees tell Jesus to rebuke his followers

  17. His Triumphant Entry • As He approached, He wept over the city (Luke 19:41-43). One of 3 recorded occasions of weeping. • Jn. 12:19 – Pharisees determine their need to deal with Jesus

  18. His Triumphant Entry • Jesus was declared King! • On this occasion He was at the height of His popularity! • Misunderstood His kingdom – Jn. 18:36, Luke 17:21 • But within days, the crowds would turn against Him. In all this, Jesus is in control!

  19. His Triumphant Entry • Will we make Him King in our lives? • He IS King – 1 Tim. 1:17, Rev. 19:16, Matt. 21:5 • Will we publicly proclaim Him as our king?

  20. His Triumphant Entry • As our King: • Will we publicly proclaim Him? • Will we be subject to Him? Rom. 6 • Is He STILL passionatelyour king? Cf. Rev. 2:4, John 6:66, Matt. 13:20-21

  21. The Life of Jesus Cleansing the Temple

  22. Cleansing the temple • Matt. 19:12-13 • Jesus goes to the temple and observes the selling of animals and merchandizing. • He proceeds to overturn the money tables and drives out the animals

  23. Cleansing the temple • Matt. 19:12-13, He says, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves’”cf. Isaiah 56:7, Jer. 7:11 • This was 2nd time He did this – John 2:13-22

  24. Cleansing the temple • Why didn’t they stop Him? • What they were doing was wrong! Neh. 13:15-22 • Jesus had a following now • Did they know, deep down, He was right? • Mark 11:18 – they sought to destroy Him Again, in all this Jesus is in control!

  25. Cleansing the temple • A passion to honor God! • Under Old Law, provisions were to be made Deut. 14:24-26 • They had turned such into a business that overshadowed the purpose

  26. Cleansing the temple • Do we see such today? • Some exploit the gospel for profit (i.e. Joel Osteen) • Some manipulate scripture for personal gain – e.g. Gal. 6:10, Titus 1:11, 1 Tim. 6:5Consider Gal. 5:13 God is insulted, blasphemed by such conduct!
