  2. What is RACE? • It’s a strategy for answering questions • It requires the writer to do an in-depth analysis of the text in order to come up with an answer

  3. But what does it mean? • Each letter stands for a part of the answer • R = restatethe question • A = answerthe question • C = cite(Give page(s) #’s and “Quote” information from the story) • E = expand/explain (Answer the question “so what?” and “what does this mean?”)

  4. The Question and Answer • What does the ugly duckling become at the end of the story? • Answer: • a swan

  5. R • Re-state the question • At the end of the story, the ugly duckling becomes a ________________. What does the ugly duckling become at the end of the story?

  6. A • Answer the question • At the end of the story, the ugly duckling becomes a swan.

  7. C • Cite (Give page(s) #’s and “Quote” information from the story) • On page 27, it states, “Instead he beheld beneath him a beautiful swan.” Also on page 27, the children say that the swan was the best swan of all because he had bright feathers and a bright beak.Plus, the duckling has a yellow glow around him in the picture which makes him look better than the other swans.

  8. E • Explain/Expand (Answer the question “so what?” and “what does this mean?”) • This lets the readers know that the duckling was no longer ugly because he had turned into a beautiful swan.

  9. PuttingItAllTogether • At the end of the story, the ugly duckling becomes a swan. On page 27, it says, “Instead he beheld beneath him a beautiful swan.” Also on page 27, the children say that the swan was the best swan of all because he had bright feathers and a bright beak.
