  1. Warm up 12/09/13 • Question: What would you call MgCl2? RbI? • Answer: • Magnesium Chloride • Rubidium iodide • Goal: I will learn how to name covalent compounds.

  2. Quick Recap • Valence Electrons • Outermost • Each group shares the same # and hence similar chemical properties • Oxidation number • Charge after getting octet. Elements in same group have same oxidation #. • Ionic Bonding • Metals lose electrons (+ ions), non-metals gain electrons (- ions): opposites attract. • Metal gets pronounced normal, non-metal gets “-ide” ending. • Covalent Bonding • Two or more non-metals can share electrons • Naming involves prefixes to indicate how many of each atom.

  3. ELEMENT OF THE DAY • 40 – Zirconium – Zr • Tubes made of high-purity zirconium are used to contain the fuel pellets of nuclear reactors. • Zirconium oxide is used as an abrasive in grinding wheels and sandpaper. • Zirconium dioxide is known as cubic zirconia, which is what fake diamonds are made of.

  4. Bellwork/ new & good • Food / trash reminder • Notes – naming covalent • Practice/HW • Homework • pg23-24 • Ch 16 quiz moved to WEDNESDAY Agenda
