  2. 11.1 Regularity in serving the meal • (1) All schools are serving the hot cooked meal daily. • (2) There was no interruption in the MDM during the current academic year. • (3)In 55% of the schools the food is cooked in the school itself. 40% of school receives food from nearby school and 5% of the school receives food from centralized kitchen. (Chickodi) • (1) The food is not cooked in the school as it gets supplied from the centralised kitchen. (Dharwad) • (2) The food gets delivered at different points of time ranging from 1/2 hour to 2 hours before the lunch time. (Dharwad) MDM Karnataka

  3. 11.2 Trends-Extent of Variations as per School Records • (1) All children have opted for availing midday meal as per the register. • (2) All children have availed midday meal as per the MDM register. • (3) As per the headcount also the same number was confirmed by the monitoring team. • Variation is a non issue.   4. 11.3 Regularity in delivering the food grains to the school level • (1) Food grains are delivered regularly at the spot in 97% of the schools. (Madhugiri) • (2) Quality of food grains is good in 92% of the schools. (Madhugiri) • (3) 61% of schools received the food grains regularly and they have buffer stock of one month, the food grain is delivered at the school itself and they receive good quality food grains. (Chickodi) • (1) Not applicable in Dharwad as food is supplied by ISKON. • (2) In 8% of Madhugiri schools, quantity of food grains is not as per the weight indicated. • (3) 58% of schools in Chickodi do not receive the food grains as per the marked/ indicated weight. • (4) In Chickodi food grain is not delivered to school in 45%of schools.   5. 11.4 Regularity in delivering Cooking Cost to the school level • Madhugiri • (1) Cooking cost is received in time in 64% of the schools. • (2) Cooking cost is paid through Banks in all the schools. • Chikkodi • (3) All the schools have received the cooking cost in advance regularly and it is through bank. • (1) Not applicable as supplied by ISKON. (Dharwad) • (2) The delay in payment of cooking cost is for about three months due to non release of amount from ZP. (Madhugiri) • (3) 38% of schools have not received the cooking cost in advance regularly and the extent of delay varies from 1 week to 1 month. (Due to transition from cash to Bank system) (Chickodi) MDM Karnataka

  6. 11.5 Social Equity • (1) There was no discrimination on the basis of gender or caste or the community among children in the schools. • (2) All children are made to sit on the floor and they are served the food. (Except in Madhugiri where afew schools serve food while children are seated.) • (1) In many schools food is served to children in queue system where children stand with plates and receive their food. (Madhugiri) MDM Karnataka

  7. 11.6,& 11.7 Variety in Menu • (1) There is variety in the food served to children in all districts (except Madhugiri). (2) The daily menu includes rice, Dal and vegetables. (Roti is also given in Chickodi.) • (1) Schools do not display menu in Dharwad. (Centralised Kitchen). • (2) The menu is decided by the centralised kitchen in Dharwad. • (3) Menu is not displayed in 95% of the schools in Madhugiri, and 76% of schools in Chickodi. • (4) Variety is followed in a limited way in Madhugiri as only Rice, and Sambar are given.   8. 11.8 Quality & Quantity of Meal • Children are happy with the quality and quantity of the meal in all districts. • No problem on these issues. MDM Karnataka

  9. 11.9 Supplementary • (1) It should be appreciated that all the schools maintain health card for all the children and once in a year medical check up is done. (In Dharwad, it is once in every six months.) • (2) Children are also given micronutrients including Iron, folic acid, vitamin A and de worming medicines periodically. • (1) Micro nutrients are not given in 5% of the schools in Madhugiri.   10. 11.10 Status of Cooks • Madhugiri (1) Cooks and helpers comprise all categories of people. • Chikkodi (2) 32% of cooks & helpers are appointed by SDMC while 63% appointed by local Panchayat & 5% by department. All of them are recruited as per GOI norms. • (3) As regards the composition of cooks, 100% of them are women, 16% are SCs, 16% are STs, 58% are OBCs, and 10% are minority group members. • (6) All cooks are female. • (1) It is not applicable in Dharwad as the food supplied by ISKON. • (2) Efforts must be made to pay cooks regularly in Madhugiri as it is not paid in 31% of schools. • (3) They are paid both through Bank and cash in Madhugiri.   11. 11.11 to15 Infrastructure • (1) LPG is used for cooking in all the schools. • (2) With regard to the availability of vessels for cooking, they are adequate in all the cases. • (3) Potable water is available for cooking and drinking in majority of schools. • (4) Majority of the schools in Madhugiri cook in kitchen. • (5) In Chikkodi 55% of schools have kitchen shed cum stores which are in use. • In Madhugiri: • (1) Size of the kitchen is not according to the strength of the school. • (2) Cooking food in the classrooms and verandahs is done in nearly 18% of the schools.   12. 11.16 Safety & Hygiene • (1) The schools are generally hygienic. • (2) All children are encouraged to wash hands before and after the food (Except in Madhugiri). • (3) Children also take food in an orderly manner. • (4) Children are also encouraged to conserve water. • (1) Since the cooking is done by the centralised kitchen in Dharwad, the safety of the cooking process and storage of fuel does not arise. • (2) Children should be advised to conserve water as it is not done in 23% of the schools in Madhugiri.   13. 11.17 Community Participation • (1) General awareness about the overall implementation of MDM Programme among the Community members is satisfactory. • (2) In Dharwad Majority of SDMCs, attend often in MDM programme & majority of Panchayats, local bodies participate often. • (3) Committee members are aware of entitlement of quantity and the type of nutrients that are supplied per child. • (1) Majority of the parents rarely participate in the supervision and monitoring of the midday meal in Dharwad, and Madhugiri. • (2) Roaster for supervision of the midday meal programme does not exist in 24% of the schools in Dharwad, in majority schools of Chickodi & Madhugiri.   14. 11.18 Inspection & Supervision • Madhugiri • (1) MDM Programme has been inspected at block level in 77% of the schools and at district level in 26% of the schools. • Chikkodi • (1) MDM Programme has been inspected at block level & at district level in all the schools. • (2) Frequency of visit has been high at block level. • (1) Midday meal programme has not been inspected by the state level officials and district level functionaries satisfactorily in Dharwad and Madhugiri schools.   15. 11.19 Impact • The impressionistic assessment indicates that the mid-day meal program has improved enrolment, attendance and the general well-being of children apart from their nutritional status in Dharwad, Madhugri and Chickodi districts monitored by RIE, Mysore. MDM Karnataka
