  1. The Texas War For Independence 1835-1836 LUKE ANDERSSON

  2. Why a War? • This war started because of conflict in the government of Mexico with the people of Texas. • To settle in the Mexican part of Texas, Americans had to convert to Catholicism and renounce their American citizenship and become completely Mexican. • The main reason for this war was the Texans had to free their slaves or leave them behind.

  3. The Alamo • This battle took place on March 6 1836. • On February 23rd 1500 troops reached the Alamo surrounding it. • It wasn’t until the 6th of march until they attacked the very small force of Texan soldiers defending the Alamo. • It was a easy win for the Mexican troops which killed all but a few Texan soldiers. • However this showed that the Texan troops wouldn’t give up even if outnumbered because they still fought long and hard.

  4. The Goliad Massacre • This was an execution of Texan soldiers. • This deed was carried out by General Jose de Urrea. • Texas colonel James Fannin along with hundreds of Texan soldiers were slaughtered.

  5. The final Battle • April 20 1836 both armies met at the san Jacinto River. • The Texan army had about 900 soldiers while there were over 1200 Mexican troops. • On April 21 the Texans caught the Mexicans off guard with a surprise attack. • This battle took only 18 minutes until the Mexicans surrenders. • Only 9 Texans were killed.
