  1. Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute activity within the INTAROS project: status and tasks for 2018-2019 VasilySmolyanitsky, AARI INTAROS-RUSSIA Meeting, 27 November 2018 Nansen International Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, St. Petersburg

  2. Background and concept of AARI activity within INTAROS • AARI has a number of regional, hemispheric national and international responsibilities on observations in the Arctic. • On national level that includes support for: • Roshydromet MECOM/WMO GTS node for the high Arctic and Antarctic • “Sever” ice analysis and production system for NSR and Administration of the NSR • NW node of the Russian national “Unified system of information for the World Ocean” (ESIMO) • On international level that includes support for: • Eurasian node of the WMO Arctic Regional climate Center – network (ArcRCC-N) with responsibility for pan-arctic monitoring and seasonal bulletin • WMO/IHO GMDSS METAREAs XX and XXI • SAON Eurasian node • Concept of AARI activity within INTAROS includes : • Intense use of data and products atoms registered and routinely produced by AARI for ESIMO project • Special attention for the products and dissemination methods of interest for the ArcRCC-N • Close cooperation with RIHMI-GDC, Obninsk - within a subcontract

  3. AARI tasks within INTAROS for 2018 and further • Major AARI activities for 2018 include: • Development of scientific base for INTAROS (WP1): • Specifications to INTAROS data from AARI side (i.e. data of interest for AARI) • Specifications for data management at AARI side for INTAROS (i.e. parameter, metrics, metadata, periodicity for AARI data/products) • Specifications for the INTAROS portal at Russian side (organization, functionality) including its support for other projects, e.g. ArcRCC-N • Assessment of existing (at AARI and Roshydromet) Arctic observation systems and databases (WP2): • Metadata on Russian and relevant international Arctic observational networks and data (products delivery) systems • Assessment of the systems status and recommendations on their applicability • Prepare data and metadata for integration with INTAROS (WP3): • List of data / products to be presented at INTAROS portal including its ArcRCC-N part

  4. Preliminary list of data and products delivery systems • Sea ice and icebergs analysis for Eurasian Arctic (AARI “Sever system”) • Weekly EU seas (Gre-Chu) ice charts in WMO SIGRID-3/WMS • Daily METAREAs XX-XXI ice edge and icebergs analysis in text/WMO SIGRID-3/WMS • Sea ice and hydro meteorological phenomena (AARI - ESIMO) • Sea ice freeze-up, break-up dates, maximum ice thickness at Russian Arctic coastal stations since 1990s in CSV • Summer type of ice conditions in the NSR seas since 1940s in CSV • Sea level at GLOSS stations in CSV/WMS • Daily weather bulletin for EU Arctic in TXT/HTML • NH sea ice and icebergs climatology (AARI “WDC Sea Ice”): • Historical collection of NH weekly-monthly sea ice charts (AARI, Planet, HMC Moscow, CIS Canada, NIC US, DMI Denmark) in WMO SIGRID/SIGRID-3/WMS • Sea ice extent and area with 1d…1m periodicity based on mixed sea ice analysis and SSMR-SSMI-SSMIS data since 1970s for Arctic Ocean and all sub-regions in CSV • Summer monthly sea ice extent and ice massifs area for the NSR seas since 1900s in CSV • Ice edge with 5d…1m periodicity based on mixed sea ice analysis and SSMR-SSMI-SSMIS data since 1970s for Arctic Ocean in SIGRID-3/WMS • Monthly gridded Arctic Ocean climatology - sea ice total concentration (CT) and stages of development (SoD), in GeoTIFF/netCDF/ WMS • …………………………..

  5. Sample products and interfaces Sample air temperature data: domain and summer 2018 anomalies Summer type of ice conditions in the NSR seas (snapshot of ESIMO interface) Sea ice extent for 1978….2018 by AO sub-domains Sep 2018 blended ice analysis with ice edge

  6. Integration / support for national node of the ArcRCC-N Support for the Eurasian node of the Arctic Regional Climate Center is an important part of the AARI and RIHMI-GDC activity ! ArcRCC-N PARCOF-2 consensus statement (seasonal summary and NDJ outlook) ArcRCC-N main interface at Norwegian met institute (https://arctic-prcc.met.no/ )

  7. Thank you for attention! • Questions: • data selection and metadata: vms@aari.aq • data conversion and geoserver: denis.demchev@aari.ru • system(s) integration: da@aari.ru, y.usolcev@gmail.com
